I've always had trouble getting motivated. Mainly because I'm a chronic procrastinator. While learning how to get over depression, I learned that motivation starts with action. Once you begin to see the progress in your efforts, you will begin to get more and more motivated as you accomplish more and more. It's self perpetuating energy. After you've reached your goal, you are more motivated to do other things and the whole process repeats. With a little patience, positivity, and persistence you can accomplish almost anything. After nearly dying from alcoholism and depression over a year ago, I can safely say this works.

To be self-motivated means that you don't need to have other people kick you in the rear end to get you going because you get your own rear end in gear, so to speak. You don't need to be told what to do, you don't need others to give you ideas and then nag you to the point that you do whatever needs to be done, you don't work for rewards that people give you, which is called extrinsic motivation. What you do is you come up with what needs to be done and what you want to do, and then you push yourself to complete the project or reach the goal that you set for yourself. When you reach that goal, you feel a sense of accomplishment and pride...and that's intrinsic motivation. I think I was born with this, so it's not really something I have to work at except in some areas, such as moving, contemplating changing my job, and exercising.

Motivation. That word means alot to me. People can motivate you to go and take a chance or you can simply motivate yourself. Basically it means someone or yourself gives you the energy to do something. As example: I don't want to go to school. Someone might motivate me and say I need a education. They're motivating me to get up and go to school.

Motivation is anything that causes you to do something. Like if the house is on fire, that could be the motivation for running out of the house.
