The most serious comlication of STORCH

A. Still birth/prematurity

B. Congenital abnormalities

C. Abortion

D. All of the above

(STORCH is a group of STD's, like Syphillis, herpes, ....)

The answer is D. but I was torn knowing A and B were right but C didn't seem as though it was a complication, so I picked B.

My question is...is abortion really a complication from an STD...?

I am not an anti abortion crazy person but it just seems like it's not a complication.....

Despite the fact that whoever actually wrote the test should go back to school to learn how to use the english language properly (how can you have more than one of a superlative?) I'm afraid your teacher is right.

Abortion simply means loss of the fetus - it doesn't have to mean deliberate termination of pregnancy. Although in this context it should ideally have 'spontaneous' appended this isn't strictly necessary. And it IS a complication of serious STDs complicating pregnancy. So all three of A, B and C are serious complications of STORCH infections.

Q: Most serious? A: all of the above - sheesh! Whoever wrote that test really needs to think through their questions a bit more.

It was a poorly worded question, but unfortunately this is a common characteristic of med school tests and tests in general. If multiple answers are complications of these infections, it would be a value judgement to say which is the most serious complication. The question should read "The most serious complication(s) of STORCH..." In this case I think abortion refers to spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) which could be a complication of infection, not induced abortion. And if you know A and B are correct and one of the choices is "all of the above", shouldn't good test-taking strategy suggest that you pick D?

The term "most" implies a single answer. You cannot have 3 "most" serious complications. Of course this is all semantics.

The other issue is that it's a matter of perception as to what is the "most serious". I will actually agree that congenital abnormalities are "more" serious than a still birth or an otherwise healthy preemie.

I will also agree that abortion is not a complication, but a consequential decision that is presumably made to avoid any of the aforementioned complications.

A abortion is something you do to end the pregnacey. So No it isn't a complication. Now when your body aborts a fetus that is called a complication. But they usually call that a miscarriage not a abortion. It all depends how abortion is put in a sentence. Weather you abort the baby, or your boby aborts the baby.

I am going to have to agree with your teacher on this one. A fetus must be aborted if the child causes a serious life threatening condition. For example, if you are pregnant and the STD kills the fetus but not you, the fetus must be aborted. Otherwise it will simply decomose in the uterus and eventually cause a slow and painful death for the would be mother. That is why you have to go get so many tests done when you are pregnant.

As a teacher I would argue that the question was poorly written and is ambiguous and should be eliminated from the test and your grade. But whether the teacher will withdraw it from the test depends upon serious complications of another type.

Life is filled with gotchas like this.

The best way to deal with them is to note that your teacher is a human being and is not perfect and move on. Oh, and try not to make the same mistake your teacher made later on when and if you have similar responsibilities.

I'm no expert, but I've never heard of anything except for a few, rare, cases of congenital defects, which could sometimes lead to birth complications. They only involved people who refused to get antibiotics from a doctor for years, though.

Did you see this in a public-school sex-ed class?

Abortion can be considered a complication if it is necessary to save the mother's life. Just a thought...

It obviously means a Natural abortion. Not that the person chooses to abort the child. Like... a miscarriage.

it is
the word "abortion" doesn't just mean a doctor sucking out a fetus. It's also means the same as a miscarriage. The body aborting a fetus naturally is a miscarriage.
