I just bought a new Cisnet CPU but it does not have any Microsoft programming on it. I do still have my old Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition CDs. What I want to know is if I can put that old XP edition onto the new CPU--is that legal? I'm 99% sure it was registered and it has product keys on it (at least on the label). If I cannot, is the new Microsoft XP update w/Service Pack 2 an entire program or is it just an update for the old system?

I've gotten two great answers and they're basically the same-but what if the Microsoft programming came with the original computer (OEM?) as a 'bundle"?

It is legal under the following circumstances:

1) Your old computer is dead or in the land fill

The license is for one machine only.

If you bought it as a boxed product (not an OEM version - one that came with the computer) then you can install it on another computer. You must erase it off your old hard drive. The license allows you to install it only on one system.

Microsoft update (I mean you are talking about Office) with Service Pack 2 is just an update to the old system.

Even with OEM bundles, I think only the base OS CD is tied to the computer. all the rest is what you paid for, or were offrered as a deal, for your personal use.. I think there should not be any issues.
