you can get a puppy there... You should worry more about the needs of the dog and how wonderful it will be to save it than its breeding! there are a million dogs out there who need homes! Why be selfish and limit yourself to one breed? I have had both pure-breds and mutts- my mutts have been better animals very often! I have a corgi-border collie mix now that we rescued from a kill-shelter where someone had left him. He is AMAZING!
You will be rewarded with love for adopting!

In addition to the Humane Society, as indicated above if you find a breed that you are attracted to, consider animal rescue, too. That is a way to save a particular animal of a particular breed that has been abandoned or can otherwise not be cared for by its original owner.
Now matter what, with the Humane Society, local animal control, and animal rescue teams, you should be able to find a good pet.
I hope you do your homework before getting a dog. They can be expensive and take a lot of time. We have 3 and the vet bill after annual check-ups and vaccinations is quite large. That doesn't take into account dog food (they get a premimum brand) and what it costs to have good care take care of them when we are gone. We live in the country and rarely travel. But, the last time we were gone for 4 days, care of the cats and dogs was nearly $300. Granted, we were paying for top notch care. Still, things to think about. Taking on the responsibility of another being, whether it be dog, person, gerbil, reptile, insect, etc... is significant. I wish more people realized that.

The best place to adopt a puppy and save a dog's life is at the humane society.

Humane society or a breeder. Do NOT go to a pet store. Most of those puppies come from a puppy mill which is a horrible way for a dog to spend their days. Try doing a search for a breeder in you area.

Check the Internet. Never buy a dog at a pet store, they are not given enough human attention to make a good pet.
If you can change your mind and just want a loving, non-pedigree pet, I'd visit the Animal Shelter. Those dogs are so grateful and you could feel good about yourself for saving a life.

You could go to the pound. Just don't go to a breeder. Save a dog! They're less expensive and usually love you more since you saved them. Remember all breeds are wonderful! Good luck with your new puppy!

Check out all the nice Pitbull rescue centers, if these dogs are not adopted they are usually euthanized, and some places kill them before they are even offered for adoption. Save a Pit I guarantee it will be the best dog you ever meet!

Many local animal shelters are pretty reliable. Check out petfinder!! As for buying a dog from someone who is safe, you need to do research, ask around and get reference from the breeder.

Petfinder.com but realize if you want a well-bred pappilon you are not getting one for free and it might be a long wait to see an older dog come thru a humane Society.
