Just passed my drive test today! How long can I drive for before my parents have the time to add me to their policy? Im 18 in CA. In other words, do I have a grace period legally?

I know that I need insurance to drive, but I thought that when you buy insurance, the car is usually covered by anyone who drives it. In my case, the car is insured, but only my parents names are on the policy. The question is can I use their policy if I get into an accident for like a few days? What if my parents are in the car with me? (since we usually drive around together to run errands). It sounds really rediculous if I have to call the insurance company the minute I get my licence for them to add me. (I'm not trying to avoid getting insurance, it's just that my dad is busy, and my mom doesn't speak english)

Most policies say you have 30 days to notify the company of a new vehicle or driver. So your parents need to notify the company within 30 days, but the company can add you on retroactively effective the date you are licensed - so it doesn't make any sense to wait.

The only exception is Progressive Insurance, where the policy form specifically states that if the household member isn't listed, they aren't covered - no grace period whatsoever.

It's different in every state. In TN, you are required to have car insurance...you can't buy a car without it.

If you are driving you are supposed to have insurance or you can lose your license.
