It is a contraction of "am not". am not > amn't > an't > ain't

It is supposedly from am I not, contracted to ain't. It is not considered proper grammar because it is so misused - since it contains a subject and verb, "I" should not be used with it. "I ain't" is redundant, since it has a double I - I am I not. Nor should it follow he, she, it, you, we, or they, since it is a contracted form of I.
