If you are trying to find faith you are going about it the wrong way.
'It is by grace that we are saved' its not logical that a man dying on a cross could be good for anyone.

Try this. There is a magical mystical bank account. If you break the rules you go into debt. You can never be good enough to pay it back because you are not supposed to break the rules in the first place.
If you die in debt you are lost.
Thats the rule.

Only someone perfect can pay into the account.
Only Jesus was perfect.
He paid.
If you can accept that your account is sorted and you are saved.

BUT as I said before this won't help you find faith, if that is what you are looking for.
ASK GOD; be still, close your eyes or look up at the ceiling or the sky and say, 'OK God, if you are real please let me know because I want to know the TRUTH and I dont understand what all these people are trying to tell me, HELP!!' you may have to do it a few times but JESUS said, 'Knock and the door will be opened' so start knocking!

Good luck

Jesus wasn't protecting us from God, God wasn't planning on killing us all.

Jesus was sent by God, He was made lower than angels (to be a man). Man had become legalistic; like a lot of people today, they were following the law even to the point of allowing people to die before they'd break it (the meaning behind the Good Samaritan parable as well as many others). And it was impossible to follow every law to the letter! No one on this earth could be held to such strictures.

So Jesus came to show us what grace is. He came to show us that it's not about following every letter of the law to the nth degree, it's about walking with God. He showed us the Way to do it, He showed us the real Truth of the love of God, and in following it, we have eternal Life (like He said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life...")

Then He showed us why we needed to follow His way - because this life isn't all there is. He had to die upon the cross so that everyone would believe He was dead, absolutely, positively dead. He had to be dead beyond doubt so that when He rose, there was no question of "welllll, maybe He wasn't really dead". He did this to show us that death is not the end, there is more afterwards.

There is a ton more to Jesus, but that's the essence of it. Hope I helped :)

Back when Jesus was around he was one of many to claim to be the mesaia (I don't know how to spell it but basically it is the son of God come down to help the people). All of which before him tried to fight the Romans in great battles. They all lost. Jesus was different, he tried going around and just making more believers. He preached his ideals and gave people something to look forward to. He told everyone that if they lived a good life in the teachings of God that they would go to Heaven, enternal Paridice. Jesus was part of a certain section of the Jewish faiths. There were many back then. Now the other faiths didn't think the Mesia (still don't know how to spell it) should not be in their version of Judism. This caused riots. Because the Romans couldn't afford there empire to be thrown into chaos they threatened to kill the Heads of the Jewish Community. So what Jesus did was he gave him self up so that these elders wouldn't die and to save the Jewish faith. He was then killed by the Romans along with two other prisoners.

Jesus did have to die on the cross to make a sacrifice for our sins. It was God's plan all along to have this happen - but if He didn't do this, God wouldn't have killed everybody off. He made a covenant with Noah to never destroy humanity again. Many more people would have suffered eternally in hell though. Jesus took that punishment for us, so that as long as we believe in Him, we are not punished for our sins because they have already been paid for completely.

God is loving and forgiving, but He is also righteous and He abhors sin. It is probably a misnomer to say that God is loving and forgiving all the time, because He hates wickedness. Still, He has turned from His wrath and poured it out on Christ, and that love is there for everyone to receive. It's our choice whether we do or not. We live with the consequences of that choice. Somewhere it says in the Bible "Here I set before you life and death. Choose life..."

God is perfect. We were created with free will which means we are imperfect. God wants us to love and worship him by our own volition. We cannot live a perfect life by our own means. God knew all this before creation (he is not confined by time so 'what ifs' are irrelevant). That is why he sent Jesus to die for us and become the bridge between our imperfection and his perfection. None of us can really tell you why that reconciled the world to God but He tells us it did.
Perhaps humanity simply needed a 'Man' to follow (the visible image of the invisible God). He had to be the first to conquer death as an example to us and so had to die a very public death first. The apostle Paul tells us it was analogous to the old testament sacrifices, i.e an innocent without blemish had to die in our place. I think Paul's explanation certainly helped the Jews understand it. Lets face it though - Jesus existed (there is little doubt about this amoungst scholars), he was raised from the dead (the Apostles died for holding this belief - there was no apparent motivation to lie) and He promised the same for those who believed in him. Believe....

You aren't any wiser because you are looking for flaws where none exist, so you create them in your own imagination based on a loose knowledge of Biblical reality and low education platform.
Jesus died on the cross as a part of the overall plan of creation and redemption by God the Father. He wasn't protecting mankind FROM God, Jesus died to give mankind access TO God. I am agnostic and even I understand that because I actually READ the Bible, not just browsed it complaining that I didn't understand it.

Think about it this way:
God sets up laws. God can not change the laws, or He would no longer be God. Attached to every law is a punishment and a blessing - punishment if you break it, blessing if you dont. For example - speed limits here - If you break it, you get fined money, and enough times could lose your permit. Dont break it, and it helps your insurence rates go down.
We are all imperfect, and can not live up to the standard that God has set, therefor we break some of the laws (sin). Therefor we are under justice. Yet God is also merciful - He wants to forgive us, but has to obey justice as well. Therefore, He sent his Son, Jesus Christ to become a mediator. Jesus Christ paid the price of Justice to be able to extend us mercy.
Hope that it helps.

I believe Jesus was a great man, a prophet of God, and a holy man. He came to proclaim the "Good News" of God's realm. When you look at his life and teachings, you see that he reached out to those considered sinners, the unclean, the outcasts. He healed the sick, restored people to wholeness. He constantly challenged the current religious leaders of his time, who were more concerned with outward righteousness, than with the inner person.
It was the Apostle Paul who first formulated the theology of Jesus dying for our sins. The early Church didn't formulate the theology of Jesus' divinity until long after his death and they were fighting against gnosticism and other things considered heresy.
Jesus lived and taught that God's kingdom is like a party, and everyone is invited.

So you've read 36 answers and still don't understand?
How about not taking anyone's word for it and reading it yourself? I would suggest that you begin by reading the book of John. Then on to 1John, 2nd John, and 3rd John, and then the Psalms. Then you will truly know who Jesus and God are. Don't take anyone's word for it. These are very well written and you will be able to understand it. Be sure to get a easy version, NIV (New International Version) or The Message translation is probably the best. (My hubby is a Preacher and suggests this one alot)
Have a great journey!

You are wasting your time. Jesus is a matter of faith, not a matter of study.

The basic story is this. The all powerful, terrible, vengfull and all knowing god wanted to understand why humans were so disobedient and difficult. So, he decided to live life as a human (Jesus), to better understand (from a limited, not all knowing perspective) what it was like. She (god) gained compassion from this, which is why starting at this point in time (from the new testament on) God never requires sacrifices, or strikes people down because they do the wrong thing, etc.

So Jesus is God, but in human form.

Don't waste your time trying to make sense of it. It is a matter of faith, not rational explanation. If you live your life according to the teachings of Jesus (not all of that old testament crap) you can't go wrong.
