this problem has been going on for a few weeks and I can't figure it out. I'm unable to play any sort of media format on my pc. each time i launch an .avi, .mpg or any other sort of media format it will lock up my system completely and i will have to reboot. at first i thought it might be corruption with the windows media player so i uninstalled it from the control panel, along with all wmp updates and then reinstalled it, same thing. I downloaded real player then hoping to play some .avi formatted movies but got the same behavior....the movie will launch for a few seconds than bam the slider progress bar stops but you can still hear the audio and then a few seconds after that the whole system locks up. any suggestions?

The driver for your video card is corrupted. Probably, the only way to fix it is for you to reformat your drive and reinstall windows.

Another possibility is that the fan on your video card is no longer spinning. As you play the video, it causes the card to heat up and expand. At a certain point, your system will freeze.

Well...
There could be a couple of issues that are causing this problem so I'm going to start with the basics.

Before you do any of these other things try to install a program with the proper codecs to play your video.

For instance, DivX Player.

or look for a free codec bundle which suits your needs on a site like www.downloads.com

If you don't have the proper codecs lots of the times Windows Media will cause the computer to lock up.

Now if this doesn't solve your problem you have to ask yourself.

Are your video drivers are properly installed?

What operating system are you using?

Is your computer compatible with the current version of Windows Media?

and...

Do you have any viruses?
