Here is my opinion.
1) The Air Force and The Navy are very good to their people, and spend alot of money to keep them happy.
2) The Army, and especially the Marines, treat their people less well, and spend less money on keeping them happy.
3) Being a woman in the Navy, and most women are not that happy in the Navy.
4) The Air force has better job training, and the jobs have a better tranlastion from the military to the real world to help you get a job when you get out. (But you still have to choose wisely.)
5) Make them write in your contract three things before you will sign. a) guaranteed job speciality (fireman, police, electronics technician, satellite repair, whatever) b) guaranteed first assignment (Florida, Idaho, California, whatever) c) guaranteed entering rank (ask for E3, or E2 if they won't go for that -- some college helps with that.)
Really try for all three, be firm. If you just can't get all three, then get 'a' and 'b' anyway. If you can't get those, you gotta get 'a' to bes sure you have a good job when you get out someday. Computer repair is like a 50 week school. Language translator is a long school -- in Monterey California. They will give you a list of all jobs. DON"T go in without a job guarantee written on the contract, or you will end up repairing roads, or fixing Humvee's.
Just go Air Force, you'll never regret that choice over the Army.
Basic Training in any of the branches is not that bad. They can yell at you, and they can make you do push ups, but they aren't going to hit you, or shoot you, or anything. Six to nine weeks, you just shut up and do whatever you are told, eat and sleep and then you are through it. They want to wash out the people who will rebel against authority, or will just start crying when someone yells at them.
Good luck to you, and write back and tell us what you decided and how it worked after you get out of basic training.

I do not know where Atom got his information on branch spending but the 2006 budgets have Air Force with 102.9 billion
& army with 3.405 billion.
The percentage of women is 19.6% & the Army second with 15.2%. My son's Officer Training Class had 12 women - 9 made it through & 5 got the conveted military intelligence spots. 3 over men who came to class from military intelligence. The women do well in the assignments. Boot camp is hard, small concessions for women only. If you can not make it through, you need to look at another career. Jessica the hero almost got an entire troop killed trying to protect someone who could not reload ( she says unjam) her gun. Then we put a lot of soldiers at risk to rescue her from Iraqi hospital. She left military but 4 yrs too soon. Sorry for seeming tough, I just want everyone in Army able to carry my son off battle field if he is wounded. Worried Mother!
Good luck. It is easier if you finish college first & go into Officer Training. Decide for yourself & God bless you!
