No, there are two different types.

Herpes simplex virus 1 is the one you get on your mouth. Herpes simplex virus 2 is genital herpes.

There is type 1 and type 2 herpes and both CAN occur on either the genitals or other areas. Since the popularity of oral sex, the term genital herpes means a lot less, now.

I do not know if they are exactly "the same thing" i.e. the same type, but I do know that YES you can get genital herpes if someone with oral herpes performs oral sex on you. It happened to someone I knew in college. I wish more people knew about it, because it could help prevent it from spreading so much if people knew this.

Basically from the same family. Society has made genital herpes less popular. Read about it and you will be surprised. They are the same thing in different spots.

They are the same virus that infects different areas of the body, you can get genital herpes on your mouth and vice versa. Oh by the way....a fever blister is herpes. And since oral sex...there has been a great increase of gonorrhea and syphillis of the mouth and throat. Be careful! oral sex is NOT safe sex!

Sores in both places are caused by the same virus.
Different people break out in different places, but it's all attributed to the same herpes virus.

I don't know to much about herpes in the mouth. I would go to a doctor soon.find out if your partner has it and didn't tell you.
