I sold my 82 CJ5 to an acquaintance on credit, but he never made payments, so I had to get it back. The problem is that when he tried to install a new cd player, he fried some of the circuitry. (I guess I see why he didn't want to pay for it!) Now the lights don't work and it won't start. When I charged the battery, there is enough power to run the heater motor and horn, but when I turn the key to the start position, the battery loses all its power. I replaced the starter solenoid, but that didn't help. Any clue where I should go next? I don't have the cash to take it to a shop.

It won't start, even with a jump, and all of the fuses are good. Unfortunately, when I got the Jeep back, the schmuck had taken his cd player back out, so there's a big hole in the dash. I figured there must be a short somewhere, but where? Thanks for your help!

A short, I think not!!! Shorts are nasty little problems that smoke and start fires, sounds like your friend had the short, you now have an open, which means that the wire is now unshorted. check for fuseable links that may have fried. they are sometimes hidden in wire harnesses. usually they come from the point that your secondary or main power (+) cable has a junction. Happy hunting

like the other guys are saying you have a short. There is probably a wire that is grounding. Track down all the wires where he tried to hook up the CD player. Not sure if yours has a silinoid is on the side or on the starter. But check the wires going to it see if you have any juice going to it. My brother had a 82 mustang ( I no not a jeep) and he tried to install a system and some how he shorted out something and it acted the same way. The only way to crank it was to jump it off. when he did it was discharging another words took it to mechanic he used voltage meter and found the problem. One small wire $65.00 later.

sounds like you have a short somewhere. That is, your hot wire from the battery may be in contact with ground, probably near the hot wire that feeds your cd player, or at the battery itself. Also check your fuses. You could also try to get a jump from someone, let it idle for a good while if it starts, 15 mins or so, and try to restart. if it doesn't restart, you could either have a bad battery or a bad alternator (which charges your battery). Take your battery to an Autozone or similar place and they will test it for you for free. if its bad, get a new battery.

I hate to tell you this, but you may need rewire the system that has been hacked. I have owned several of these jeeps, especially the older types. ('49 CJ3A, two '49 Willys trucks, '76 CJ7 Renegade, and my current one, a '65 CJ5A Tuxedo Park, and in most cases, the wiring on some of these were fried, hacked, etc. and I had to rewire the system. You can go through a magazine like JP Magazine, Four Wheel and Offroad, etc. or go online to www.earlycj5.com for information as to where to obtain a wiring harness. Believe me, if you have no clue what the previous owner has done to it, replacing it is the way to go. It saves time and frustration.

It sounds to me like you need to clean up your battery terminals. Another possibility is the other end of your ground wire from your battery may not be making a good connection to the frame or engine block, wherever it connects. Try cleaning up the battery terminals really well. As soon as you try to draw a large enough load to run your starter, it draws too much for the meager connection you have, and it stops. Sometimes it's cheap and simple fixes that really baffle you, and are real headaches.

there is probably a short in the system. sorry the only way to fix it is to bring it somewhere that can re-wire the short. some shops might let you pay for the work in payments. but not very many.
