I have a 4 month old australian shepherd pup who has what the vet says is an umbilical hernia.I bought her to put into shows, and a possible mate for my other aussie.Should I have this removed or wait and see if it goes away on its own?It is about the size of a quarter.Doesnt seem to bother her any.Her breeder says I shouldnt worry about it,that the mom did it by biting the umbilical cord. This pup is the neice of my 2nd aussie so,I am familiar with the breeder and she would not steer me wrong.
Any info will be appreciated.

Umbilical hernias usually don't cause a problem unless they get big enough for a loop of bowel to get stuck in. They don't usually go away by themselves, but can be fixed easily with a simple surgery. Many times we fix them when the dog is spayed or neutered. I would only fix it if it were big enough to worry about or if it would affect showing her.

Congrats on the breeder that advised you about the hernia. an excellent style of breeders do not tell the recent vendors and the recent vendors discover out a the vet workplace. Hernias at the on the spot are to not serious. You did not say in case your dogs turned right into a male or female. If a woman not in any respect breed her. even if it closes on itself , which some do, the pups can lay antagonistic to it causing the hernia to open for the pups to fall by skill of. not declaring which will take position yet there continually a hazard which will take position. The vet will restore it even as they restore your dogs. As for the fellow that stated it become undesirable breeding that isn't the case. As not something to do with the breeder. It has lots to do with the mommy biting the twine to close to to the pup. I have reduce and tied my pups twine, yet she bit the twine afterwards. I had one in all my pups not have a hernia even as it become born yet confirmed up after the pup become offered. That become the first for me. The vet will allow you to already know what your ideas are. good success to you.

Well, sometimes it just happens, but I have seen cases where there are several in a litter and it seems to be congenital. In that case she should not be bred. Ask the vet about that. Also ask the vet about how improtant it is to have it corrected. Some can get big enough to let a loop of intesting down through and cause a stranglation of the intestine. Ask the vet for an opinion. Breeders are not the ones to ask about that. The vet should be the guide as to wheather or not it can be a conditioned passed on!!!!!!

Usually these hernias do not go away. In fact the intestines can come through the hole in the muscle and die. I would get the hernia fixed to avoid any problems. sometimes hernias are also genetic. So I would talk to you vet about the medical problems not a breeder. After all your vet went to school for 9 YEARS to take care of your dog, your breeder just puts 2 dogs together and lets them breed. Who do you thin you should trust?????

If it is that large, it should be removed and you should have her spayed at the same time, because she should not be bred. There will always be a weak spot in the abdomen where the hernia was. The breeder was wrong and should have told you the truth about the hernia.
