leme explain it quiet thoroughly to you unlike some people....
after the death of prophet muhammad (pbuh), the muslim community was debating who should lead after him. a council was formed and 4 canidates were made:
abu bakr
ali
uthman
omar
abu bakr was picked first, and a big controversy emerged. one group wanted ali to be leader because he was a blood relative of the prophet. the others picked abu bakr because of his spiritual level. abu bakr and the other candidates includng ali were asasinated by an evil group of christians from the church. the two grups are known as sunni and shiite. sunnis wanted anyone with good spirituality to be the leader, and shiites want only blood reletives to be leader. those are the only differences. they just seem like a big deal because the news agency makes it a big deal. shiites and sunnis dont fight nowadays, it is just what they say on t.v. they dont really know whats going on in iraq

It has to do with their beliefs in who is the legitimate successor of Muhammad - Shiites believe that the imam (leader) must be designated by the predecessor and belong to the family of the Prophet (Muhammad). The last legitimate leader disappeared back in the eighth century and supposedly will return at the end of time. The Sunnis, about 85% of all Muslims, believe in the concept of a caliphate, where a caliph is the legitimate successor to Muhammad (not necessarily a blood descendant). Since there are no more caliphs in this day and age, neither side has a universal ruler, like the Catholics have the Pope.

The Sunni's and Shi'is(Shittes) are both Islamic believers who worship separately.
The Sunni's follow in the way of the Prophet Muhammad who is referred to as Sunnah (which means...the way of the Prophet).
The two groups (Sunni's and Shittes) differ on who should have been the Caliph (the ruler) after Muhammad's death.
Because of the disagreement, the Shittes have a different understanding of beliefs and practices.

that's sort of like Catholics and Protestants we are both Christian yet we do not see issues fairly the same and we are able to get slightly sh'itty with one yet another each and every so often. The Shitte and Sunni are both Muslims and they are both slightly sh'itty each and each and every of the time. God bless kisses Betty.

Sunni Muslims ans Shiites Muslims are in one in terms of religion.
Sunni Muslim believe in the successor of prophet Mohamed [S.A.W] chosen by man while Shiites believe in the one Prophet Mohamed [S.A.W.] chose.
shi'ites Muslims leader were not rulers of Arabia they were just there to take care of Quran and Hadith of Prophet Mohamed [S.A.W.] so nobody changes a bit of it.
So that's the one reason you'll see lots of sects emerging from different understandings in rullers but in all the religion is same and that is Islam.

Shiites are the conservatives and fundamentalists. Similar to Christian fundementlists and evangelicals.
Sunnis are the liberals. Tend to be secularists (believers in a secular society separate from religion).
Like Christian fundamentalists and liberals, Shiites and Sunnis can't stand each other.

Sunnis prefer car bombs while Shiites are more into those stylish vests of explosives. My point? What difference does it make, they all hate us enough to blow themselves up just to kill one of us.
