My mothertongue is French. And I confirm that "Les fesses" mean the butt. Well, the butt cheeks, to be precise.
Because the butt, or the a*s*s* would be "Le cul" in French.

Les fesses means "the bottom" it's a more polite way of saying "***". The vulgar way would be "cul"

'les fesses' is just slightly technical / formal:- so the best translation is 'buttocks'.

there is a different demotic / rude word for that part of the body, if you want to translate 'bum' (or any of english' nastier words).
