I am studying to be an interior designer so I think I could help a bit. I would paint your molding the same color as your walls, and your ceiling a lighter shade of the same color. Don't do anything darker than your walls or you'll bring your ceiling 'closer' to the floor.

Hope that helps

edit: don't paint your crown molding white. If you want your crown molding to be lighter, try a pale pale gold or taupe, but not white.

Take the wall colour all the way up to the ceiling and yes do the crown molding too. this gives the illusion that it just keeps going and going. If you put another texture or colour across, it breaks the eye and you lose that illusion. the molding being the same colour should help it fade while still having that finished look you just don't get without it.

I suggest doing a creamy tone, like an off white or beige color would be nice. I think a dark trim color would be nice or you could do white ceiling with white crown. That is very nice and might make the room look larger and brighten it up.
We are doing a gold tin ceiling in one of our rooms. That might be an option too since you mentioned the gold crown.

Good luck!

I would paint he crown molding light beigeand the ceiling parchment white. This would heighten the look of the ceiling with no shock at the top. It's called blend, blend blend.

You want to add depth so I would paint the ceiling 2 shades lighter than the wall.I read this in a magazine and decided to try it in my bathroom. It turned out great. As far as the crown,if it were me I would paint it white since there are many different shades of white to choose from.
