First off, I'm not an atheist...anymore...
But I'm gonna answer your question, in the interest of enlightenment. You should not feel sorry, or be angry, or even want to change those who do not believe in God (any god, not just yours or mine). Everyone comes to faith throught their own reason, and there is no way anyone can change that. So, my suggestion is to lose the idea that you can change people's beliefs...that mentality has started wars.
Atheists, traditional ones at least (not the emo dork in high school who doesn't believe in god until you scare the crap out of him), don't see the idea of "no afterlife" as depressing. It is motivation, rather. Life is energy. Where you and I believe that energy goes to a higher existence, atheists believe it goes back into nature. Almost a brand of reincarnation, but not in any religious sense.
If you were to die, and nothing was there, you wouldn't be depressed. How could you be? You wouldn't exist!
So there, it is not depressing. Death is the natural answer to life. It is also a motivation to live life to a fuller being, rather than plan on being great in the afterlife. Of course, you and I believe that living well in life leads to greater things in the afterlife. But it is different in an atheist view.
Atheists are not evil (again, real ones). They live life well because of consequences nature provides. Living selfishly leaves you with a hole in your being. Living for others, in this religion (it is a religion, by the way), rewards you in ways other than a great afterlife. In a way, it almost LESS selfish than the idea that God will reward you for being a good boy.
Sometimes, I think we should all be a bit more focused on the here and now than what God will give us in the end. He does not want that from you or I. Of course, it's great to see us acting well...but our thoughts too often are made up of selfish desire to get into heaven.
Would you give up eternity for those you love? That is selflessness. Atheists, again, are not bad people. They have their beliefs, and you must respect that.

It's hard to answer. I don't want proof from u, i know why u believe what u believe because i used to believe it too, I have chosen to take a different path that's all, i follow my own beliefs and i respect that u follow urs all i ask is that I'm shown the same respect i show u! I believe what i believe because i just don't see how it's possible for there to be a god who lives up in the sky in a wonderful paradise with billions of ppl who managed to make it in to heaven, where would it b? the universe as far as we know is infinite and hell where is it? it cant be in the center of the earth we already know what is in the center of the earth.
There is also evolution, now I'm not an expert on evolution, in-fact I've only seen 1 program about it on discovery channel, but that was enough to convince me it's real, I also don't get how ppl can take the bible literally, Jonah and the big fish makes that impossible u cant live inside a fish no matter how big it is, the stomach acids would kill u. And what about ppl before Jesus? Where do they go? They didn't know about our modern day God, so are they punished for that? Same with animals what happens to them, when they have done no wrong but cannot accept god because they don't have the brain capacity? They're are just too many unanswered questions for me too believe, to much reasonable doubt,

Proof why I believe what I believe, here's 5 main reasons.
1) Evolution proven by science.
2) I'm a woman, and I like black people, and I have no problem with gay people, therefore I can't stand racism, sexism or homophobia.
3) I have my own brain and own mind, therefore I am the only person who will control it.
4) I believe I am not born a sinner, I am born an innocent member of society, and as long as I uphold my own morals and don't break the law, I have not committed any sin.
5) My mind will not be corrupted by some book written many years ago which is filled with propaganda and hypocrisy. Rationale and intelligent thinking cannot be guided by the words in this book.

The Universe, as revealed thru science, shows us that all things are born, live and die and that's it. From Galaxies, stars, planets and life. We are born, we live and we die. Believers in an afterlife see that as the "ultimate do-over" Hey, if I mess here in this life, there is always the next. Plus there is some comfort in knowing that we might see our loved ones. But, there is no guarantee in the next life, only this life we are living at this very moment. Is the only life we know of.

God Did It is just too easy an answer for everything. The rain? An earthquake? You get sick, you get better, a civilization collapses, your dog dies, your mom finds a dress she's always wanted. God did all this? Then God did World War 2, too, and the holocaust, and slavery, and AIDS and cancer. So we are not to work against the Will of God--we should have kept slavery, we should still be fighting WW2, and nobody should try to ever get better from any disease--its God's Will after all. Sorry, its just too easy an answer.

My proof is in my brain. I do not believe in what you believe in. That's about it.
And I don't believe in an afterlife; I believe we should do good works here on earth because that is what good people do, not because I'm going to get some goodies when I die.

I'm not an atheist or a believer. I am looking for proof one way or another. But I know the Bible isn't it. It is against most of what I believe in...slavery, sexism, murder, revenge, war, crime, etc. What atheists believe in is what they experience, at least that is the impression I get. And in that way we are alike. You can't demand that I prove my experiences just because you can't prove your religious beliefs. Now you are just being lazy.

God believers start from the statement: God invented humans.
Atheists start from the statement: Humans invented God.
Simple as that. And no position can offer unquestionable proof. So the debate is endless.

Athiests simply believe in a void of God. They dont believe there is anything. Its not a issue of depressing, its a simple believe that once you die, you die. There is nothing to follow.
