I work for a dentist and i used to have braces when i was younger with the same problem. the best thing to do in your sons situation is get him to brush twice a day. Brushing is essential and you should encourage your son to floss before he goes to sleep getting out food and dirt from all those hard to reach places. The best cure for gingivitis is brushing and flossing. The quicker you treat it the quicker you can prevent advanced gum disease.

The reason his gums are depleting is he isn't keeping them clean enough. But at the same time he must be gentle with his gums when cleaning. If he brushes too hard he can actually cause more receeding that can be permanent. A water pik is a good idea plus use a wooden tooth pick to gently go along the gum line removing all plaque. A proxie brush that looks like a tiny christmas tree works great for large spaces. Flossing works great too but get the kind from "gum" it has a thin yarn type center and a stiff side. This side slides between the wire and can pick up food better than just the regular floss kind plus it actually will slide through without a threader. Also stress the importance of keeping his mouth clean.

When in doubt, ask some one that is trained in determining these things. Having your sons hearing checked out is an excellent first step. If you don't know where to find a ear, nose, and throat doctor make an appointment with your child's pediatrician to express your concerns and get a referral. A good place to start with getting your son some basic development testing is with your local school district. Very often they can give you the number to the early childhood special education services department. Although autism is not often diagnosed at this age unless it is severe, there are huge benefits in starting therapy and education with it as early as possible. The difference between an autistic child that received educational intervention at 3 is a completely different child at 6 then a child that is diagnosed and treated at 5. If nothing else, the only thing you will lose by receiving an evaluation for your son is a couple of hours of time and gaining some relief. I would like to mention that many places can be understaffed and overbooked. There can be long waiting lists to even schedule an appointment let alone get into one, so if this is something your gut is telling you to get checked out I would strongly suggest asking for an appointment now. You could be waiting 6 months to a year before you receive any formal testing or diagnosis. If in 5 months time you feel your son has made huge drastic improvements and that your worrying was exactly that, just worries, you can always cancel the appointment.

There is a tooth brush called Sonicare that works awesome for gingivitis. Keeps gums healthy. It's a powerbrush so he has to be willing to use an automatic brush. This will also help get food stuck between brackets. I hope this helps. Also he has to start flossing. I know it's a pain when you have braces but it will help the gums get healthy quicker. But the Sonicare will help and be fun to use.

I had braces when I was young, and had similar problem, brushing after every meal is essential with braces. They also have these special piks that look kind of like a pipe cleaner to get in between the braces.

He needs to floss his teeth daily, that will help alot. It takes like 10 - 15 minutes. You can get him a oral b tooth brush and get a brush head that is made for braces, that will help. He also needs to make sure he gets his cleanings regularly.
