Men lie in the begining of the relationship because they are hiding girlfriends from the new girlfriend until they decide if they want to keep the new one or not, or until the new girlfriend finds out about the old girlfriends that are still girlfriends; then the guy acts as if the new girlfriend is crazy for even thinking that he would still have anything to do with the old girlfriend; then they have to cover up the old lies with new lies; then they can't tell the the differance from the truth from the lies. So they tell another lie, until they start believing the lies are the truth...
Another reason is they want the new girlfriend to think they are something they are not, they make up excuse so that the new girlfriend will not ever meet his home boys; because if she did she would find out what a looser he is; then he would lose the best thing that ever come into his life. So he keeps telling lies about things that he should not even be telling lies about because we as intelligent women find out about men's stupidity every time anyway.
Another reason is they are so into themselves that they believe thier fantasies are reality; and then the women sits back after months of trying to figure out the things that are not adding up, after months and months of thinking she knew him, and in reality she doesn't know him at all...Which makes her feel really stupid because she thinking, how could I have fell for his line of crapp. Because men wouldn't know the truth if it slapped them in the face and said Hey I'm the truth now get it straight sucker..
But I have to say it all comes back on them when they have sons and their sons look them straight in the eyes and tell them a bold face lie. That really pisses the men off....
Another thing men think it is ok to lie as long as it serves thier purpose. And men will do anything if they knew that they could get by with it... but they usually do it anyway because they will look at you and tell you a bold face lie to save their butts.
The day I told my man not to ever lie to me was the day he started and it took him a long time to figure out that I already knew the truth and the truth was not worth lieing about... and he don't have the sweet, innocent, will do anything for him, woman that he had before she knew that he was lieing. Does he miss that other women, Yes he does.
Men who read... this if your woman thinks you are lying to her and she will eventually set you up. She will ask you a question that she has proof on ... If you lie it could be the last you see of her. So the best thing to do is tell the truth and don't do anything when you are not with her that you wouldn't do in front of her. Or don't do anything that you wouldn't want her to do if she wasn't with you...
If other women are like me I would rather be punched in the face by a man than have the man that I love lie to me...At least that way I would know what I was dealing with.

They never HAVE to, so the question is worded poorly. People lie for various reasons...often to either get what they want, or keep themselves out of trouble...
Regardless, it's a poor habit to get into, and does nothing to encourage others to trust the person who lies...
Keep it honest...be yourself...and go from there...

I don't know why they have to lie. I think that it would make things easier to just tell the truth. It would prevent alot of problems in the world. I still wonder why they do.

*insecure of oneself that they portray themselves differently and don't like who they are as a person or have issues,
*he will lie well past the point of all rationality because, in his mind, he has nothing to gain by telling the truth.
*they lie to keep relationships on a superficial level because they are not that into u..

The ones that do that are liars plain and simple. Some women are like that too.

I agree with Luna, insecurity is probably the most common reason.
No need to lie if you are happy with what and who you are.

I am not the lying type, but my guess would be habit. or so you don't know when they are telling a whopper of a lie?
