I've been a painter for 33 years, my opinion would be that there aren't many colors that "clash" with a dark brown. You can stay with the beiges (watch the undertones for pink or peach though), greens, dark blues, almost anything will work. If you have painted woodwork the darks are nice, if you have wood the mediums look good. With a dark brown couch check the undertone on the furniture too, is it red? Gold? Green? etc. Brown would be considered a "neutral" color, so even red or gold would work. We just redid an older house where I live in very light colors, antique white/pink/blue/beige & cream colored walls with white ceilings and woodwork upstairs, walnut trim downstairs and they have the new "dark wood" furniture in all of it with golden finished oak floors. It's very striking done this way (light) too. Pick your colors according to other things in the room too and don't forget to look at colors you really like, just make sure they match the undertones of the furniture, you can always add more of the color with other items too to draw it all together.

I think the best colour to set off your brown sofa would be a warm shade of peach or orange....depending on the shade of brown your sofa is, and the decoration and furninshings in the rest of the room.
If you get a paint chart you can try it next to the safa and find the one that's best.
An alternative, if you don't like orange or peach, would be a lovley rich cream colour.
You could co-ordinate this look with a tall brown ceramic vase, perhaps with some tall flowers in it......
If near a window so that it would get enough light, you could place a chocolate plant , then your guests could sit on the sofa and admire the dark chocolate flowers and the smell of chocolate....while drinking hot chocolate.....very tasty!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to indulge my design fantasies!!

Go to a paint store and get samples, that way you can try to match other things in the room not just your couch. As far as a color suggestion, I would say a light blue or a light green those are very popular with brown right now.

I saw the perfect fabric at walmart for you :) It was a very light weight fabric. Now that I think of it, it looked almost like muslin. It wasn't bright white, but it wasn't really as dark as a tea stained muslin. Anyway, if you were to find a fabric similar to that, you could make it into a very light, gauzy curtain for your windows. I think it would look wonderful as a floor length curtain. You're not the first person that I thought this would look good with. :) I think I'm going to be telling everyone this haha.

I'd say a dark cream would be nice with some other brown accents to match the sofa.

I have a caramel wall colour on our bedroom walls which the girlfriend picked. It goes really well with the brown bedding and brown curtains and other stuff she has managed to clutter the room with!!
We are also in the process of doing another bedroom with a toffee colour and this also works with brown.
I think it is different shades of yellow but my girlfiend disagrees. look at light yellow colours!!!
Hope this helps

Our family room furniture is chocolate brown leather, and we used a paint color called peanut from Devine paints. It is a very subtle gold color. It looks great with the furniture as well as the trim that was already antique white.

BAGE!!!! it works wonders for brown sofas, or you might like to try a greenish tope colour. both work!
up side for bage:doesnt clash too much but adds a nice tone to room. down side: depends on shade
up side of grope(green tope): it can clash but in a good way
down side: sertian shades CAN clash to much.
to find the right shade I suggest taking a mach to your sofa and com pair swatches.
