To track our history through myth and religion. There is a wonderful book called The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers about the roll that myth and religion has played in our history. It's extremely fascinating and an easy read.

It started off as an attempt by primative peoples to explain the world around them. The high point of theological power was probably in the dark ages. Gradually as time has gone by theology has lost its power to explain medicine, all of the sciences, technology, governments, economics, literature, and most things that humans do.

It is left with an increasingly narrow slice of understanding that seems to boil down to archaic concepts like sin, souls, and pretending that things are being explained by appealing to God as a cause.

Of course there are simple minds that don't understand the modern world and seek simple solutions to everything. They are the ones who still are under the power of theologies. Sometimes they control entire countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia.

That said, religions do serve a non-theological purpose in society by caring for those who need help. Unfortunately some misguided religious leaders use the helpless that they should be caring for to justify their silly dogmas and harmfull agendas.

keeps the uninformed idiot away from the serious student? Theology college actually teaches people how and when to preach, and what they should say. and as you can probably tell if you've read a few questions and responses, people on here mostly don't go to theology because they just won't shut the hell up

Human beings are complex and multi-faceted creatures. To understand them more thoroughly,
we must study their spiritual beliefs and aspirations as well as their mental, social, physical and emotional growth. To omit one facet of a person's being is to limit complete understanding of the total person.
