Why do smokers believe that it is OK to just toss the butts onto the sidewalk instead of into a trash can?

Why don't crush them out, then throw them away? Why would they believe that it is OK to simply throw garbage where they wish?

Because most smokers are in psychological denial. They hate the habit they are addicted to, but can't quit. The "flicking" away of the cigarette butt is as much an unconscious expression of disgust as it is a practical method of getting the offensive object as far away as possible. Many smokers are actually very considerate in every other way and, in fact, would probably be shocked if you called them slobs or litterbugs. Most smokers do not realize they are littering, or offending people around them. Of course there are exceptions.

The sad part is that the cigarette butts do not end up in puddles to be cleaned up, but end up in the sewer drains, where they eventually either make their way out to rivers and oceans to poison marine life - or - they end up trapped in the filters of sewage treatment plants and are partially dissolved into your drinking water.

This is why my favorite activity at traffic lights is to get "butt flickers" to roll their windows down, whereupon I say to them in a very concerned manner, "I think there's something wrong with your car!", to which they reply, "what?", to which I answer, "your ashtray is broken!" They usually give me the one finger salute me after that.

Do " YOU " bother to pick the butts up yourself and dispose of them properly, or are you only a complainer? By leaving them there on the sidewalk, " YOU " are as much a part of the problem as the smokers themselves.

I don't know.

I am an ex-smoker, but I always made it a point to pocket my butts (there are actually little containers on the market for this purpose) until I could find a suitable receptacle.

those who smoke tossing their cigarettes out the automobile window is the stupidest element ever..i'm a smoker..I easily have not began to do this because at one time i surpassed a automobile that did purely that..i had my decrease back window down..the cigarette went into my automobile and landed on my then toddler woman..also what about bikers that get hit by employing flying cigarette butts..to me its a thoughtless act

Because the trash can may have paper in it and catch on fire. Old butts that have been rained on end up in piles where water runs off, so people like you that ask dumba** questions like this can pick them up and dispose of them.

They don't have a problem polluting their own bodies or the bodies of those around them, so why should they care about polluting the planet?
