The minute you write anything (any document), it is copyrighted and "belongs" to you, even if it does not have a copyright symbol and date. So, your website is already copyrighted. Now, if you want to protect your ideas and be able to sue in court over infringement, you'd need to register the copyright with the copyright office (usually, you send them a couple copies and a fee). But you do not need to register to have copyright. You can put (c) Copyright Yourname 2006 on anything you write.

Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say:
"The use of a copyright notice is no longer required under U.S. law, although it is often beneficial. Because prior law did contain such a requirement, however, the use of notice is still relevant to the copyright status of older works...
The use of the copyright notice is the responsibility of the copyright owner and does not require advance permission from, or registration with, the Copyright Office."
Hope that helps!

Yup, once you set something into a media you can copyright it. This says that others cannot use it without your permission.
However, to actually able to protect and defend your copyright it is prudent to file it with the copyright office.

yes - just by saying "don't use this"
you are given certain protections - copyrights, and trademarks are different though
if you have a cool logo trademark it, if you took some great digital photography, write copywrite in the corner
the other option is a poor mans copyright, where you send a hardcopy of work to yourself in the mail, that way the postmark proves the date of your creation - as long as you don't open it

Yes, and the time code of such is so . but unless you have an actual paper from the copy write office you really have nothing. Just like a poor mans copy write , (mailing a letter to yourself with the contents inside )
