Have you spoken to the orthodontist about this? What does the dentist say?

Has your son been brushing his teeth regularly? How is he brushing his teeth? If he is too rough, that may be part of the problem. He should be using a brush with soft bristles and brush his teeth and gums in small circles. Rinse with warm salt water.
Don't forget to floss.

I am an adult. I had braces as a kid and had some periodontal disease when my braces were removed. The surgery was long and awful! I had braces in the 60s when they were metal bands across the teeth.

I also had braces as an adult. The orthodontist's staff showed me how to brush and floss my teeth. There is a floss on the market by Glide that have a small plastic needle to pull through the wires and bands (threaders!). He can use those.

Every little bit helps!

Return to the orthodontist who fitted your son with the braces.Bleeding gums may be caused by ill fitting braces and/or a pyorrhea condition brought on by the inability to brush and floss the areas under the braces. Pyorrhea can be treated by a periodontist.

is it because his braces are scratching his gums? If so, go to the local store (Walgreen's, Longs Drug etc.) and buy wax (not candle). You can place wax on top of the braces, making them a bit smoother and less sharp on the gums and cheeks.
