Manifest Destiny was the principle that God had given America to Christianity, so the Christian God sanctioned the abuse and slaughter of the Native Americans. The Aztecs were a pretty gruesome bunch. Any culture that requires a daily human sacrifice to get the Sun to rise doesn't draw a whole lot of sympathy. But once again, God was there, right next to Cortez, encouraging the slaughter.
Throughout it's history, Christianity has used "God" to justify all kinds of heinous actions. Maybe things would have gone better for the natives if God stayed home.

It's a sad sad thing that man has freedom of choice. Just because these soldiers claimed themselves to be Christians and catholics does not make them good people. We all come to points in our live when we have a decision to make. there are only two ways to go, good and bad. When man has the ability to feed his wants desires and greed most likely he will do whatever it takes to get it! Every living thing will die, it's the great balance, good/bad life/death etc. And it's sad that man would murder for his own benefit to cut a life short and to torture another. The question isn't where was god, but where was man morals?

He was helping the White man rid the land of blood-thirsty savages. That's where! Aztecs, Mayans and Incas were murdering other "natives" with impunity. They performed human sacrifices. Where was God then, hummmm???

Jesus NEVER organized a Posse in his life and I challenge you to show where these "so called" Christians were appointed of Christ in the name of God to slaughter people - ANY people. Its not in the Bible
It was a matter of power and greed by highjackers of the Christian doctrine empowering "themselves" - which certainly these who done such contrary things are in hell. They did these things on their own merits and own ideas - not based on the teachings of Christ. Which I might add - Christian means "Christ Like" therefore they were not Christians other than self appointed.., somewhat the same way as someone who knows nothing about sports can "claim" to be a dedicated sports fan.

This world can be a pretty hellish place....and it's not God's fault, it's our fault. I always did wonder why some of those "Christian" warriors called themselves Christian as they murdered so many innocents. It's amazing the way we can interpret scripture to suit our needs...whether they be good or evil. Try investigating some Eastern thought....philosophy....it deals with alot of questions that are on your mind. Good luck!

God was watching foolish and evil humans doing the slaughtering...and what makes you think that what was done by the conquistadors, european settlers, our own US army, among others, was in any way encouraged by word or example by Christ? don't try to pretend that the rational men and women of almighty science had clean hands in the whole mess, from sociologists and anthropologists who tried to make dark skinned replicas of white americans out of the people who had created great civilizations back when europeans were mumbling to themselves in caves and worshipping trees...from ben franklin, one of the premier scientific minds of his day who thought setting attack dogs on the 'red savages' was fine and entertaining sport , to those who defiled the graves and remains of native people to fill their museums of almighty science with 'artifacts', to 'enlightened' political leaders who decided that the red man had to go...there is blood on the hands of virtually every group that came into contact with the native people...
now, that i've finished with THAT rant, let me remind you that man was created with free will...something even scientists would have a hard time debating...so don't try to pass of the evils of mankind onto a God in whom you don't even believe...atheists can't, try as they might, have it both ways...if there is no God as you all claim so condescendingly, then you cannot lay these evils at His doorstep-on one point, atheist and those of faith must agree-evil is manifest in the works of men...and for every torqemada or ayatollah khomeni, there is likewise a josef mengele and an albert plecker...

You ask people where God was why not ask God where were the peoples' hearts when this was happening. The better Question is" why does God place freewill above all His other gifts to us? " When you answer that ,you will no longer have other questions like the first one.

I keep trying to make this point. You have to sign on to a religion for it to work. Like you have to believe the magician is really pulling coins out of your ears, its hard to be amazed and awestruck if you already know the whole thing is a farce.
Anyway, the native Americans didn't subscribe to the one diety thing, so he was under no obligation to protect them.
