a "sub culture" is just that. A subdivision of an existant culture. By making certain overt choices, such as hairstyle, clothing, entertainment preferances, etc... you provide visaul cues to others that you share ideas and goal with other people who also make those choices. That may not always be the case, perhaps you wear all black because you're a messy eater and it reliably hides the fact your dropped your lunch on your shirt front, but as it provides easily identifiable cues, it's likely to get used regardless.
