Downtown has many offerings:
Go to Phillippe's for the original french dip sandwich; very old building, saw dust on the floor, and the best chili and lemonade in Downtown (ask for two glasses of it, they're small and only 50 cents each).

In Olvera Street, go to La Luz Del Dia, which is right accross the street from the church and the parking lot adjacent to the church. The carnitas with the home-made tortillas are sooooo good, and if you're really down to try o.g. Mexican food, get the
nopales (cactus), so tasty!

It really depends where in LA and what you want, and how much.
I'll give you my favorites but you should check out zagat.com. Thats a local guide which tells you what's good and bad about the resturants
For chicken, I love Roscoe's chicken & waffles.
Its usually in the african american neighborhoods, but the chicken is so good! There's multiple locations and the one in Long Beach has a jazz club on weekends and plenty of parking.
For upscale dining I enjoy any of the Patina group restaurants. The original Patina moved to the Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA. You can check out the menu at patinagroup.com.
For steaks I really like the Original Pantry near the staples center. Its cash only and a bit pricey ($18 and up) but the steaks are thick and greasy, and oh so yummy!
For prime rib I like Lawry's on La Cienega. Sure its a bit commercial but the spinning salad is worth going for!! Just a little ways down Lawry's is the rest of "restaurant row', with upscale Japanese like Matsuhisa, Mortons for steak, or that fancy Korean BBQ.
For chinese food there's the Monterey Park/Montebello/Alhambra area, located off the 10 and 710 freeway. Just look inside and if you see a place full of Asians, its good. Most restaurants open til 2 am and even then its packed full of people.
Like I said it depends what you want, and how much to spend, and where you wanna go. LA is a big area to just narrow down to 1 or 2 places.

I love to eat and live in Los Angeles, so I hope I can direct you to some great eating establishments!
1. Natalee Thai (2 Locations - Robertson/Olympic and Venice Blvd, west of Robertson): Natalee is a "hidden jewel". It's reasonably priced, the service is excellent and the presentation of both the food and the space is absolutely fabulous and beautiful! I recommend the Robertson/Olympic location because it is more intimate (Venice is a bit cafeteria like to me).
Best Dishes: Monsoon Noodles, MeeKrob, Salmon Skin Salad (Venice Location has full sushi bar), Thai Iced Tea and, of course, my FAVORITE item, Rama's Ribs.
2. Noodle Planet (Westwood Blvd. and Wilshire - in Westwood Area): This is another Asian place (what can I say, we can really do Asian food well here in So Cal) that is so low priced, you won't believe it. The menu has about 4000 things on it, noodles and other yummy goods from all over Asia -- Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese -- you name it, they got it.
3. Hugos (Santa Monica Blvd in We Ho or Studio City): This place can be a bit pricey, but it's a fun place to take people visiting LA. It's VERY So Cal -- lots of "healthful" sounding options, great tea and the best of Cali Cuisine. I have seen many celebs at the We Ho location.
4. Factor's Deli (Pico at Beverly): There are a lot of "NY STYLE" delis in this town (such as Jerry's and Canters). But Jerry's is lame and not traditional at all and Canters is always packed and the parking situation sucks. A great alternative is Factor's Deli which has all the great taste of Canters without the long wait or grimy tables. (Don't get me wrong, I love Canters, I just hate the wait and it's too dark in there!) It is still the same price range as Jerry's though, so it can add up!
5. Cobra Lily (Wilshire just East of La Cienega -- Just look for the Flynt Building!): Cobra Lily's owners also run Cobras and Matadors which I have not been to. However, Cobra Lily is a sinfully delicious tapas place and they DO serve paella (no paella at Matadors). It is a tiny little place, but so fun for a small birthday party or an intimate date!
Best items: Steak!! FABULOUS!! Sweet potato fries! The Almonds and Olives! And of course ... the red wine sangria. Share your food and wine with your date or party -- this is such a festive, fabulous place and the service is terrific!
6. Swingers (Santa Monica Location: Broadway and Lincoln, also located on Beverly west of Fairfax): Fun, 50's style diner with many healthy options. I am gluten intolerant, so I love that they have quinoa (I know, it's so rare!), soy shakes, and honestly, the best damn french fries with ranch in LA.
Swingers is a great late night place -- it's open til 3am or so, so you can hit the Santa Monica location after the bars close or the Beverly location after a late movie!
7. The Belvedere at the Peninsula Hotel (Little Santa Monica and Wilshire, Beverly Hills): Want to eat next to Dustin Hoffman? Have a pre-dinner cocktail with Mischa Barton? Ahh the Peninsula. My favorite place in LA. Sunday brunch at the Belvedere is too good to be missed ... and dinner? Amazing. They can do things with chocolate I did not even know was legal.
Beware, though, the Belvedere, for those of us who are not major motion picture stars, is probably out of our price range. But save up, dress up and take your seat next to J.Lo (who stayed at the Peninsula after she and Ben Affleck broke up, and probably drowned her sorrows in the Death By Chocolate) and enjoy what this town is all about -- celebrity, fashion, style, money and amazing, innovative food.
Can't afford it? Try High Tea at the Peninsula -- it's not AS pricey, and you'll still get to chill out in the tea room and watch the high class go by.
Well, these are just some of my favorites, enjoy and good eating!
PS - In-n-Out has the best burgers in LA! Here's a tip -- ask for the fries "Well done, animal style". They'll be crispier and come with cheese, special sauce and grilled onions! Yum!
