Asperger's disorder carries a specific criteria in the DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition). The criteria for such diagnosis is listed in the link but your child should be evaulated by a trained psychiatrist as there are other disorders that can appear to be same diagnosis.

Try a mental health counselor, like an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). Your family doctor might be of some help as well.
I found the following websites interesting. The last one is a support group.

PLEASE when u find out can u foward the same info to me, i tried getting into the army a year back and i "failed" the physical beacuase of mental things as a child, i grew out slowly as i became an adult, but the army seems to want to dance around the subject and refuse to give me a clear answer as to why i was bared for LIFE from serving my country, and therapists could put there finger on what to call my "illness". i dont put much though into it these days for trying to go foward and not piss away my life like i did as a child/teen. it makes me mad becuase i could never get an answer to help me. i hope you can find advise for your kid.
the only i think i can give is try to get your son interested in science, my intrige in the earth and universe exploded midway in high school. you say your son is intelegent, so try science, any subject. i have been through this and i know ist a hedache, and there was one day i will never forget when i realized i hurt myself by "foating" away from reality. if u have any questions drop me an email darkpheonix262@yahoo.com. only now at 25 is my life begining toi become stable, and i plead u not to let your son mess his life up, and remind him all those who help are doin so cuase they care, a m essage i didnt get till it was to late.
