Under construction for the last decade and due to be completed in the next 5-15 years, I am curious what others think about this possible 'marvel' of engineering, the relationships between its construction vis-a-vis the World Bank/IMF and private investors, and subsequent effects on archaeological sites and displaced inhabitants, and of course, the efficacy of an enormous project underwritten by governments and private concerns and the almost necessary graft involved. Also, any other thoughts....... It is a pretty cool structure, all things considered...

Probably not a good idea.

But it's a bit presumptuous on our part to say that third world countries like China can't build large dams.

We did.

While I was visiting the site of the Three Gorges Dam in China in 2000, the guide was talking about problems caused by other dams. Specifically one on the Yellow River that silted up and had to be torn down. We asked how they know that won't happen to Three Gorges Dam in a few years? He didn't have a good answer. If there is any construction project bigger than building Three Gorges, it will be tearing it down. If they do that, will the over-a-million displaced people be able to return to their once-flooded towns?

I think its a huge mistake both environmentally and socially. The dam is completely messing up that ecosystem, and the higher water has already covered up many important archeological sites and displaced millions of poor people.

The engineering is quite amazing, but you have to realize that a large portion of the government is corrupt. A lot of corners have been cut and money stolen. Most likely, the dam will not be properly built and they will have lots of problems with the structure of the dam in addition to the already daunting list of problems the dam has created.

that's a significant engineering fulfillment and includes the most important set of locks interior the global (been by using utilising them - interesting expereince diverse than they have a tendency to fill with fumes of each and each and every of the vessels being moved) - yet you'll favor to argue that it has destroyed the adventure of crusing interior the path of the gorges (as seen in previous pictures) - with the aid of actuality the cliffs are decreased by using technique of about 0.5 - many villages destroyed interior the technique etc - yet on stability the reward outweigh the ecological damage - yet China has a bent to not get sentimental about such themes.
