Put the dog on a leach and take it off the patio to do it's business then give it a treat when he or she does the right thing. After a while the dog will learn that it will get a treat when it doesn't poop in the patio and will continue to please you by going in the grass.

What's wrong with going on the patio? Poo left in the grass will create a stink and a walking hazard for people. It might also leave brown patches on the grass. So once a day, you have to take a baggie to pick up the poo and then hose off the patio. It's better than a stinky back yard or poo on your shoes. Another plus of pooping on the patio - if he ever gets sick and you have to take a poo sample to the vet, it will be easy to find and uncontaminated by the ground.

Your dog's scent is on the patio, and will return to it to relieve himself.

When you let him out, put on the leash, and walk him to the grass. Reward him with treats and verbal praise when his "business" is finished. This won't happen in one day, and it must be done each time he is let out. In about a week, just your praise of "good dog" should be enough. A few drops of bleach or pine scented cleaner on his patio spots may help lure him into finding a new area.

Try putting the dog on a leash and not letting him near the patio until he does his business. End of problem. No exceptions. He'll go when he has to. Then PRAISE him when he does go on the grass.

When he squats on the grass the blades slash his butt. Squat on the patio and that doesn't happen. Could YOU take a dump with knives stabbing your butt? Same thing with doggie. If you had to make the same choice you'd dump on the patio too. Doggie is not as dumb as you think.
