They do have very fragile legs. It is probably not the best breed for a toddler. Look at spaniels, terriers (Bostons, etc), labs, shih tzu, bulldogs. Go on to petfinder.com and look for a dog that is in a rescue/foster home so they can tell you about the dogs' personality.

Italian greyhounds are wonderful pets but usually aren't good for children. Actually it's more accurate to say that children aren't good for IGs. I have never seen one nip and that really shouldn't be the concern. They are a more fragile breed and they are generally best in a quiet and calm atmosphere. Children are neither quiet nor calm and most children are not gentle.
Because they are more fragile they are prone to broken legs, esp. as puppies. Most everyone I know who has an IG has had a broken leg at one time. As far as running off easily that really depends on the dog. However, these are sighthounds and should never ever be trusted off a leash. That is true with all sighthounds not just IGs.
Although I love this breed and have one myself I would strongly recommend a different breed for you and your situation.

Toy dogs are as a rule bad pets for toddlers - while a lab can afford to react to a two yr old falling on them with an Ommmph and a lick the toy is literally in danger for it's life and may react that way (all out defense including teeth).

I don't think they make good pets period. I know there is a following for the animal, but they are generally neurotic, scared, and extremely hyper. This is not a good combination for a dog because it means they always think something is out to get them, they take a defensive action when they feel threatened (which is always), and they will do one of two things when they are in defense mode, 1) pee all over the place or 2) bite anything that comes near them. On top of it all they are way hyper, this means they jump all over everything (including you), they run (never walk) and they bark constantly. But hey do what you want to.
