You need 10 acres per cow and that is just for the grass.
You need at least 2 acres per person to be able to support yourself.
I don't remember how many acres it takes for the grain, and I live in grain country.
Considering it takes 18 months to 2 years to raise the steer before you butcher and the meat can be frozen for 1 year and you may consume all of that meat in 6 to 8 months.
You need a community or allot of ground.
We have it easy these days.

No. We had tomato plants in our garden for a few years. The tomatoes were delicious and my wife did all the gardening work, but it still wasn't worth it. We always had to plan our meals around eating the tomatoes when they were ripe, and I got tired of compulsory tomato consumption. It's so much easier to just buy what you want at the store when you want it. You can get organic, or locally grown, or whatever you want without having to do it yourself.
That goes tenfold for meat. No way would I go to all the trouble of raising, slaughtering, and butchering animals when I can just buy meat.

GOD NO!!!!! As long as I buy it at the store and it comes with a Safeway sticker on it- I can pretend it comes from the meat fairy! If I raised an animal and saw it every day and took care of it every day I would NEVER EVER be able to kill it or eat it!!!!

No, I would rather buy from a health food store, the organic fruit/veggies store, and my favorite local farm.
Oh great, now I want raw milk and organic grapes.
