I know this one!! I was in DC the last two Decembers. Yes, the usual stuff is there, the museums and things like that. But, it's nice to see a touch of the holidays in DC.

First of all, I have to recommend the Library of Congress! There is an awesome tree in the Grand Hall decorated with handpainted wooden books from every state. The library itself is beautiful to look at in general, also. The White House Visitors Center also has a display of what the White House is decorated like, along with the Bush's holiday photo. In front of the White House is the National Christmas tree, surrounded by the Menorah and smaller trees from every state. There is a walk through the display, where you will see the tree going around the National tree, children's groups entertaining, and huge flaming bonfire, and more. Go at night, of course, to get the best effects.

The crowds are less in December, which can be nice. You will miss out on the beautiful gardens, but just visit the US Botanic Gardens that are in full bloom all year, right next to the capital. You can't miss it, it's the large greenhouse between the Library of Congress and the Capital. Inside they have miniature versions of all the national monuments, made from natural materials like bamboo and twigs. It's beautiful in there, and you will forget for awhile that it's winter!

You can see a play, maybe the Christmas Carol, at Fords Theater.

It's a great place to visit in the winter!

All of the museums are still open. There are several Christmas trees (White House, Capitol). The National Cathedral has some Christmas events. I believe the National arboretum usually has some special displays. Kennedy Center usually has something for the season.

I'd recommend the Smithsonian Institution, Renwick Gallery, Hirsschorn, Georgetown, in addition to the usual monuments (Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, etc.).
