Let's see...this really sounds more like a Political Science question than one for Religion and Spirituality so I am going to answer it from that viewpoint. It's a question of CONTROL...there are factions Secular and Religious who believe that women do not have the right to control their own bodies. Weather a fetus is alive or not it all comes down to a woman's right to choose. Impeding freedom of choice goes against the Secular law and the same freedom supposedly breaks the Religious law. There is a battle of ideals going on and I for one favor WOMEN having the right to choose. PEACE!

I am not sure how a genetic research scientist can help orphans in Romania with their skills. They just want to help mankind with a potential cure. I think that we should keep them AT WORK.
I know a young woman who's sight was partially restored with the use of experimental stem cell treatments. Its a miracle... she threw away her White Cane.
The FUSS is all about that possibility that GREEDY people will sacrifice living people (or fetuses) to harvest a money crop of stem sells. Would you give up your life for someone that could afford to buy your body parts?
But YES, we should all be concerned about helping others on our tiny planet. The governments of the world agreed to support the Millennium Development Goals.
Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty
Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education
Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality
Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Good idea. What are you personally doing about these problems?
And what makes you think that pro-life people are NOT worried about Darfur, Romania, and so on?
What makes you think in such zero-sum terms? What makes you think that caring about the unborn makes one incapable of caring about the other issues?
Doesn't it occur to you that people can care about unborn babies and orphans in Romania at the same time?
Another question -- do you really care about Darfur and AIDS and orphans in Romania, or is that just your "cover" for attacking pro-lifers?

To many, a fetus IS a living human. This is the whole seat of the argument about abortion. If it is a baby, it is entitled to the protection of the law. If not, then it is "property." The U.S. does put effort into many other causes, but the abortion issue is a domestic "hot button," so it gets more air time. By the way, there are cases where a woman used crack during her pregnancy, and delivered crack-head baby. They were prosecuted. Had they aborted it, no prosecution. Logical? Not really.

My Church donates to The One campaign to help fight AIDs (http://www.one.org/) and donates money to international aid groups that help orphans all over the world. The politics involved in Darfur don't allow for much aid to get sent directly there which is VERY sad. My Church is aware of all of these situations but is concerned with the unborn as well. We must help all of those who cannot help themselves.

Yes..they don't care about starving kids but it's their pet hobby to stop research and stifle scientific breakthroughs that might throw up questions about their religions and religious beliefs. They are protecting their religion and their concern is for the propagation of their religion..starving kids can go to hell meanwhile, and they will prevent the distribution of condoms and happily watch millions die from aids and leave millions more orphaned chldren unnecessarily just because they have a whim to push the idea that abstinence is a solution to aids...it's not practical unfortunately.

Well, your question touched a nerve and got a couple of really hostile answers, like Julia's, which proves its integrity. By the way, most Christians I've known apparently think giving money to their church is adequate charity.
Two things will get Christians out to carry placards and scream hatred: Demanding that the lives of zygotes be saved, and demanding that the lives of death row inmates be ended.
... And gay rights issues, of course, which also get a very hostile response from the same people. I see a pattern here: They have a Hitler complex.

I am a woman, a Christian, and pro-life. I care about all of the above. My husband and I personally sponsor three needy children (one from south america, one from india, and one who probably lost a parent to AIDS in Africa).
A fetus is just as much a human as the "living, breathing" humans, and are equally deserving of protection.
It is so ignorant to portray abortion as a women's rights issue. I completely disagree!! And I'm a woman. The "pro-choice" movement does NOT represent me. It is about whether that baby is a human being deserving of protections. We have a "right" to privacy in our own homes, but very few people would defend someone's right to murder their own child in their own home. How absurd would it sound to say "My house, my choice"!!

Fetuses ARE living Humans. And some do put their efforts where you suggest. We each need to discern what human problems we see as the most critical.

With so many suffering from cancer why do we need heart specialists? It's all important. Maybe someday that fetus and stem cell research technology will help prevent birth defects in the places you mentioned.
