Going to stay a night in Hana, then the next night its back to Wailea. So I was wondering how long the other road from Hana would take me? Thanks

I know the Car Rentals say this road is a no no but really is it that bad? thanks again

It's a great drive just ask the people at the front desk of the hotel if the road is open, every once in awhile the roads or a bridge will wash out. You won't end up in Wailea the road will take you back around, up the mountain overlooking Molokini Island by the Tedeschi Winery (you can stop there for a tour) you'll be up in the mountains looking down on Makena & Wailea, then you drive back down from around Pukalani, Kula area. You can't drive all the way around the shoreline to Wailea unless you get one serious 4 wheeler. The road stops right after Makena on the shoreline.

The Road to Hana is only about 50 miles, but it is 50 miles of hills, twists, turns, one-lane bridges, spectacular views and interesting places to stop. A person could do it in an hour and a half; but you won't and you will miss an awful lot if you do. Go fairly early in the morning and take your time. Be sure and stop to buy a cd or tape that narrates the tour using mileage markers to tell you when tot start and stop the tape. Plan to get to your hotel by checkin time. Are you going to Hotel Hana Maui? It is the best! a faboulous spa.
The Road to Hana is quite good. The other road past 7 sacred pools and back to Wailea is not all paved and depending on weather conditions, it can be bad. I don't recommend it. Instead, I would drive as far as the 7 sacred pools and then turn around and come back along the same famous Road to Hana that you come in on.
Wouldn't you rather spend your time on a notorious and famous scenic drive, than on a road specifically recommended to avoid? You'd better have AAA in case of a breakdown -- imagine how much a car rental company would charge you to tow you back in case of a breakdown, or accident. State residents feel confident to drive that road because they are using their own vehicles and can get help if they need it.
