PLEASE don't be an *** and take this as something in anyway rascist. It's just been in MY experience, that black men and women tend to be more religious than most people.

Does anyone know the history about African Americans and Christianity? I am curious to know how it became this way.

Ok I didn't say I had any problem with this to the person who answered 1st, now did I?

I understand the slavery aspect too - but where did the people who originally came from Africa learn about Jesus Christ?
Didn't they have anyother belief system in Africa, and why did they loose it eventually?

I'm 1/2 black and 1/2 white. The reason that most blacks are religious has to do with slavery. God was there for my ancestors and gave them hope. There is something embedded in every person that tells us that there is a higher power.

You have to remember that most slaves were into to voodoo and stuff like that. This why black Muslims will say that Christianity is the white man's religion and it was forced on us. That's not true, Jesus was the source of hope. They taught their children and then their children were taught and so on and so forth. It's a part of our culture as well as our souls.

The Black slaves had nothing but they could have religion. Theirs was a combination of African and Christian religions. Their spirituals were ways of communicating without the owners knowing what they were saying. Because of this background the closeness to God and religion has stayed with them. They are probably on the whole the most religious people in America

People instinctively turn to a higher power when things get tough. The Black People have endured much, including slavery. Besides this, they are very emotional, & many forms of religion include emotional forms of expression, such as worship. I have found many Black individuals to have a faith that rivals my own.

IF you know GOD as a People, then get away from HIM, that open's the Door for the Devil to come into your midst and kill, steal and destroy. The African's knew GOD, then got into witchcraft (medicine man, voodoo etc.). Then they got destroyed. This has happened with Israel several time's. It can happen in your personal life, Usualy, when it happen's as a Nation of People, another Nation or two etc. does the destroying. Hope this helps. Ditto.

so in a way, someone might say that slavery was almost a good thing, in one facet, that it reinforced their belief in god?
