Sedona, Arizona has a lot of artists there. However, it can be pricey to live there. The scenery is absolutely fabulous and there are tons of trails and mountains to go hiking on. It can be very inspirational to be in and amongst nature. Also, it is rumored that there is a stronger magnetic field around the Sedona area and some think this could be a sign of potential alien activity or something like that. If you haven’t been there, it’s worth a visit, absolutely gorgeous, bring a camera.

I'm an artist from Austin, living elsewhere, so I know what your going for. I used to travel the US extensively for another job, and in my spare time I'd always hunt out museums and shows...
New York, no more needs to be said about that.
I was suprised with Kansas City, MO. and actually did not want to leave. They have a pretty hip little art scene in the city and some groovy neighborhoods that reminded me of Austin. The museum rocks. The shopping supprised me as well.
Couldn't find the locals in St. Lois, didn't spend so much time there, but their museums are great... the fine art M. is home to one of the huge Monet waterlilies paintings, and the City Museum is a huge piece of work in itself.
I live in Indy now and it has suprised me as well in terms of people and nightlife... Herron is a famous art school and people come from all over for it. The problem with Indy is that it is just SO far from Austin, TX. And although it wants to be hip, It's a really young developement here, so it's kinda neat that it's a new scene, but kinda not b/c there are a lot of pricks here.
Love VA and NC, but the cities aren't anywhere close to what Austin is, the artist communities there are very tight knit.
I'd personally like to spend some time in CA.
Hope that helped.

New York or Los Angels are your best bets. I can only give you the Los Angeles perspective. We have a GREAT art community. Everything you can think of!!! I currently follow the digital art scene on: www.lacda.com.
Good luck with your decision. There are several art communities throughout the US. Santa Fe, NM is also a great place for artists...so you see, there are many places.

Most large cities have established art communities. NYC (The Village), Los Angeles (Los Feliz, Venice), San Fran, Philadelphia, etc., etc. Go where you feel at home, and you'll find your niche.
