There are many causes of insomnia. You should see your doctor about what could be causing it for you. It can be caused by stress, caffeine, diet and a sedintary lifestyle, or excercising within 3 hours of sleeping, just to name a few reasons.

Try chamomille tea before bed. Cut back on coffee, or don't have it within 8 hours of sleeping. Find ways to reduce stress, take up yoga or something. Start excercising or if you do excercise, be sure not to do it within 3 hours of your bedtime. Try deep breathing excercises when you are trying to sleep: breathe deep and count your breaths.

I have insomnia from time to time. I take 1/2 a benadryl 1/2 hour before bedtime for up to 3 nights in a row and it helps me to get to sleep and I get back into a normal sleeping pattern. I usually have to do this every couple of months, but it helps me get back into the right rhythm. I also know people who take melatonin (what your body produces as a signal to fall asleep) supplements for a couple of nights to get back on schedule. You have to be ready to go to sleep when you feel sleepy, though.

Best wishes.

Try reading a book, before you go to sleep. I find that usually works for me. Warm milk also has some chemicals that help you fall asleep and stay asleep longer.
If all else fails, try counting sheep.
