I was in the Navy for six years. During that time I was never gone for longer than two weeks - and only twice. But that's an exception to the rule, and definitely not the norm. I honestly really wish that I had deployed more.

As for liking the Navy, it took me a while to get used to. I'm from a hippie family in Seattle and most of my friends went on to private schools while I enlisted. Sometimes I resented being told what to do all the time or being under the constant threat of punishment. I didn't really deal well with the politics - I saw a lot of good people get screwed over and some not-so-good people advance. But then again, that may be an exception to the rule as I worked in a very small community. However, I think that the positives outweigh the negatives. I really loved my job and I met a lot of great people. I learned a foreign language that I'll be able to use for the rest of my life. I had good benefits (although I wasn't always pleased with the medical care) I lived in good housing, and I was always comfortable. I'm glad that I'm out now, but I'm also glad that I spent six years in the Navy, serving my country. It's something that I'm really proud of. It helped to shape me into a more responsible, independent person and overall I had a really good time.

The Navy is a job that inherantly keeps you away from family. We deploy on regular intervals, and you always have the small fires that pop up so you have to surge. There have been periods of time where I didn't see my family for a year or so. After I got married I was forward deployed to Japan. Great duty, but guaranteed to keep you away from your family 7 months out of every 12. The good side is that I've been in more foreign countries than I have been in states here in the U.S. I've seen and done things that most people only
1. Dream about

or

2. Have to pay a lot of money to do it.

It's been a great life experience and a wonderful time.

I'm not in the Navy, but my husband is, so I think it's ok that I answer this!
When my husband was on a ship, family life was normal when he was in port, but his ship went out to sea at least for a week or more during the month. I had girlfriends who had husbands on other ships, and they didn't go out as much as my husband's ship did. Maybe it depends on the kind of ship they are on. They do have six month deployments. Those are the hardest because we don't see them for the whole six months. When he had shore duty, it was like any other job. He would go to work in the morning, and was home no later then 4 every-night, and was off for the weekend. ( When you're in port, you're also off for the weekends unless you have to stand duty )
When my husband came up for orders two years ago, he was due to go back to sea duty, so we decided instead of him taking orders to a ship in Virginia, we would take orders to Italy because this particular command he is with is considered sea duty. He does travel some because he is a tech and goes out to ships that either are out at sea ( They fly him on and off the ship ) or in port, and fixes their equipment that he is experienced with. He can be gone for up to a month, but that is pretty unusual. Normally, it's more like a week or two. We are actually very lucky, because we have him home a lot more often then other military familes have their loved one home with them. Pretty much, aside from the traveling he does every now and then, this command is also like any other job.

I was in the navy for 5 years. I did get to see them usually twice a year but not always. I liked it. I got to go to 14 different countries. It taught me allot about how good we have it here in the U.S.. It was an experience I'm glad I did and would recommend it.

I worked on aircraft carrier flight deck. Dangerous but VERRRRRY cool.

If you're thinking about joining and dont want to be away from 6 to 9 months at a time I suggest the Coast Guard. First they are much cooler and you will never be more than 2 weeks without hitting a port.

I am just now experiencing the Navy life. My fiance is in it. He is deployed for 6 months at a time while on sea duty but while on shore duty, he is home every night. Hope this helps.

I was on a sub for 6 years. I got to see my family quite a bit when I was only 7 hrs away from them, but when we moved to Hawaii, it was obviously harder. 6 month deployments were hard, but necessary. We do get 2 weeks of leave time a year.
