Just wondering is it better to eat before or after you exercise, and if so how long must you wait?

It depends on the Quantity and Type of food you eat. Some people eat fruit, or protein, before exercising...not a lot, but enough to be metabolized during the exercise routine. What you need to understand is that digestion is WORK for the body. More blood will pass by the digestive system to absorb the nutrients. To the extend that you eat a BIG meal just before exercising...you are looking for trouble. The blood neded for the muscle groups being used in the exercise will be competing with the digestive process. Wait at least an hour before undertaking strenuous exercise after a BIG meal.

How long you have to wait after eating to begin exercising depends on the amount of food you eat. If you have a big breakfast, you may want to wait up two hours before your workout in order to digest your food properly and avoid stomach distress. However, if you need to get your exercise in soon after waking up, eat a smaller amount of carbohydrate that won't be too difficult to digest. Some people find that liquids are a little easier to tolerate in the morning if they need to work out relatively early, although solid foods are absolutely acceptable if your stomach can handle them.

I'd rather eat afterwards. However I go until exhaustion. I'm a junky when it comes to exercising, but if you need food before do so. If you eat before wait around an hour or so, maybe more depending on how much you ate and if it was 'heavy foods' vs a snack or a salad.

You stomach takes energy away from you body to digest food. It is better to eat after you go to the gym as cardio and aggressive exercise shut you stomach down during a work out. If you must eat before you go give your food 2 hours to digest.

For cardio, it is better to do it on an empty stomach in the morning, in the morning your body is in a fasted state (emptied of glycogen) and your body will rely more on bodyfat as a fuel source.
For weight training eat a small meal 30 minutes before and a liquid supplement directly after, you need a steady supply of protein and carbs so you do not use muscle tissue for a fuel.
