Apparently if you melt the metal and try to turn a profit on that, you'll only get about a quarter-size amount of metal! So, what are the orthodontists charging for?

Labor? The time it takes them to put the braces on you takes away from the time they could spend on other patients. They also need to pay for the cement to keep them on your teeth. The company that sells the braces to the dentists also have to charge their own labor for the machines they use to form the metals and more. Also there's the electric and heating/air conditioning bill for the office (and you are sharing in the use of that light, heat or AC while you're there). They also have to pay the nurse or receptionist that finds your files on the shelves, uses the computer to ring up your bill (also using electricity), and pay the hygenist that sterilizes all the utensils or the company to buy new utensils. There's also the phone bill for when the patients need to call or they call to confirm appointments... Not to count they need to make their own profit to make a living as well as pay the salaries of all the other employees in the office. Most dentists aren't living in mansions with 6 Mercedes-Benz's, despite what many people might believe. Dentists are doctors but don't make nearly as much as heart surgeons or anything.

There's actually a lot more coming from the money you spend than you might think.

You are paying for the orthodontist knowledge, the hardware they are putting on your teeth, the overhead that it takes to have you in the chair, you are paying for sterilization, an assistant, electricity. There are many things unseen or thought about that you are paying for, but I am sure you are getting your moneys worth in the end you will have a great smile....

The labor it takes to put them on, it takes 2-2 1/2 hours to put them on in average cases, and when they put it on, they put this thing in your mouth to keep it open and to make sure you can't wet your teeth because otherwise they won't stick to the cement. The cement costs money, and all the appointments you go in for, to tighten wires, and replace the rubber bands, and other factors depending on the case and why they have braces.

well, since you are paying to get straight teeth I don't think it would be a good idea to pull the metal off to sell now would it?
