A Mormon can date a non-Mormon. In fact, my roommate, who is Mormon (as am I) is dating a non-Mormon. The challenge is when it comes to serious dating. Most Mormons who are very active in living their religion won't seriously date or marry non-Mormons because active Mormons have a goal of being married in the temple. To be married in the temple, both individuals have to be members of the church. However, as far as casual dating, I think the more important thing is dating individuals with similar values and morals. I wouldn't date a Mormon or non-Mormon if they're on a totally different standards page than I am.

Those within the Mormon faith are probably encouraged to date someone of like same faith. If by chance one dates a Mormon and later plans to marry one, that person is most likely going to be converted into the Mormon faith to make the marriage recognized and sanctioned. I could be a slight off base on this, so research it out.

Yes Mormon can date non-mormons. We do have free agency. I will not date a non mormon because I will not marry a non mormon. My Husband needs to have the same beliefs as I do.

they can, but if they are a "good" mormon they won't because they believe they have to be sealed in the temple for the afterlife and if the spouse isn't mormon they can't be sealed.

Of course they can! The "standard" that is set is that the person that you date should have equal or higher morals, values and standards that you do. That makes sense, doesn't it? It's what any good parent would say. This does not mean that we exclude ourselves from interacting with people with lower values... we just may not DATE them.
