there are two ways to serve.. PTS(Perform to serve) and regular enlistement. PTS is 15-24 months, but you have to petition to stay in(and may not be allowed to, no matter how badly you want to) and the choice of ratings is limited.

a regular enlistment is 8 years total commitment but any where from 2-4 years of that can be in the Individual Ready Reserve or the Reserves.(1 w/e month& 2 weeks/year deal) only limits here are what your ASVAB score qualfies you to be. Certain ratings require a longer AD commitment.. up to six years, for instance.

4-6 years. Just long enough to get the benefits. They usually use it as a reference on a resume for their next job. Makes finding a new job much easier once you've been in the military. Some high school graduates enjoy the military so much that they stay in the full 20 and retire with them.

Four to six years, depends on what rate you choose, the more technical your training, the longer you stay, the less technical, such as BM or SH, your enlistment will be four years. Then they offer enlistment bounses and such for extending for 12 month after successful completion of "A" school (That is dated, 1999)
Officers are different, going to USNA or NROTC college+ officer obligation you are looking at 10 years!

My advice; If you want to go in as an officer, complete college first, THEN start looking at a commissioning program.

If you don't care or just going in for the experiance, Enlist as a Boatswainmate (You'll have to start out as an undesigned Seaman), Yeoman, Ship Serviceman, Storekeeper, Personnelman, (basically anything taught at NTTC Meridian, MS at the enlisted Supply or Administration schools)

8 years. Depending on the job you sign up for, it breaks down differently between active and inactive reserve, but 8 years is the standard. Most people do 4/4, but my NEC(job) was 6/2. Inactive for me was just that.

You can sign up for 2 yrs then 4 yrs of reserve time is required.
You can sign for 4 yrs and then you are pretty much free to start a new career as a civilian.
