My transmission quit to day. I pulled out of a parking lot and stopped at a stop sign, When i went to take off again the car wouldn't move. I could rev up the engine, but wouldn't go any where. I checked the transmission fluid and it is brown istead of the redish color. When I put the car into gear, nothing will happen. This is the same for forward and reverse.

The fluid needs to be changed at the very least, but the clutches are probably burned out (there are no bands in that transmission). I would find a used one to put in your Escort if changing the fluid doesn't help. Hope this helps. A new one is too much for a nine year old car and there are plenty of Escorts in the salvage yards that have faced untimely deaths due to accident.

Sounds like the pump in the tranny went out. Most likely the tranny is going to need a complete rebuild, check around for a rebuilt or junk yard one that has some kind of guarantee.

Brown fluid? Not good. Means their is friction and burning going on. Ask around for a good trans mechanic in your area. Try to stay away from those trans repair chains--they are total ripoffs. Good luck.

Sounds like you have transmission problems. I'm not sure, just guessing. And the fact that it is a Ford product, it's probably a d*mn good guess...
