Why do some adults think youth cannot avoid having sex?

If youth cannot control their urges then why would adults expect their siginificant other to be able to control their sexual urges? At what age does being able to control your urges come into existence, if this is indeed the case?

I can't speak from personal experience, because I think young adults can control themselves if they think it's the right thing to do. However, I will try to answer the question from the other side.

When you're born, you basically have very little (if any) control over your urges. Got to go to the bathroom? Now's a good time! See a toy you want? Just grab it!

As a person gets older, they usually gain more and more control over their urges. It differs for every person, but society as a whole generally recognizes 18 as the age of "being able to make legally binding choices," which is just another way of saying "The age of responsibility for controlling urges."

So it is not illogical to think that a young adult would, at the very least, have a harder time controlling their urges than an older adult.

I believe that's the thought process behind that opinion...

It is ridiculous to think that youth cannot avoid having sex, but equally foolish to think that most WILL avoid having sex. It is less a matter of age, and more a determination that each individual has to confront on their own terms. An urge is just that, a notion that comes into the mind. There are those who are weak-willed give in easily to urgres without thought, whether they are sexual or otherwise. And there are those who think about and agonize over the decision. Those who value themselves and want to make decisions rather than be ruled by their horomones will do so. The reason I think alot of adults think that young people cannot control these urges has less to do with what the young person might actually think themselves, and more that they believe the youth will go along with the idea because of peer pressure. This is your chance to prove them wrong! Stick to your guns and wait until you are ready. (And again...any age that might be suggested has more to do with the maturity and the ability to think a thing through rather than act on impulse, which is where alot of youth function...not just these days, but back in mine as well. I would say that the ability to make the decision of whether sex is right for you or not comes somewhere about the end of what is normal college age).

To answer you initial question without reading of Herbert Spencer's overstuffed arguments, Yes. However, since children lack the ability to reason or think clearly due to the fact that there brain are not as developed as ours. Technically, they should have the right to vote, but since they are so susceptible to suggestion, a candidate would just have to put out a commercial with him and some cartoons and he would win in a landslide. Now, looking at that question including Herbert Spencer's ideas, The very foundation of which he builds his arguments I would argue is flawed. He states that a rule must have no exception. However, since rules are based off of morality, and morality is basically and except to the human nature, that means rules are exceptions to human natures. Rules are what separates us from the animals. There has to exceptions in rules, but not to them. Its obvious Spencer has misinterpreted this maxim.

Some adults put a lot of emphasis of sex and sexual rlationships instead of Love. Then they encourage children to have relationships they aren't ready for. Or try to unring the bell.
Ain't going to happen.
I taught my son that there is no 'safe sex' because there will always be responsibility and deep feelings even if no one gets pregnant or transmits a disease. -- I am happy to say that his girlfriend shares this attitude.

Because we adults know what a screaming mass of hormones we were as kids. Add to that the fact that kids brains haven't quite perfected impulse control, and you have a formula for disaster.

Educate your kids about sex. Do a thorough job- spare no detail. Then, they'll have the tools to overcome their screaming hormones and stay out of trouble.

Because in our oversexed culture, too many adults have lowered their expectations when it comes to young people.

For many adults today, words like "restraint," "discipline," "morality," and "abstinence" have become dirty words.

With role models like that to look up to, it's no wonder our youth are under tremendous pressure to have sex -- and too often yield to it.

I know it's not trendy to tell young people today that the only perfect way to avoid pregnancy and STDs is to abstain from sex. But it's the truth. If we don't tell our young people the truth, then we're telling them a lie. It's that simple.

i beleived 14 was the age of consent and i didn't hear vincent complain but now 13 seems more appropriat because its a teen thing. parents who disagree are just plain greedy. cause they know it will affect their way of life.

when i was a teen i would have loved to have had sex, i waited till i was eighteen because i agreed with the bars that said only adults are allowed into their establishments, so i waited.
