Cats Dont Like Water

2006-07-10 11:16:06 · answer #1 · answered by mks 7-15-02 6 · 0 0

Actually, some do enjoy the water. It really depends on how they are introduced to water and bathing. For the most part, though, house cats do not like to get wet because they know that several hours of grooming will soon follow - this distracts them from being wary and paying attention to what their instincts tell them - self-defense and eating. Plus, it weighs their coats down and makes them slower on their feet, making a quick getaway less possible. If you think about cat behavior overall, then the reasons become clear. Unless water has something to do with normal cat activity, like hunting or drinking, they'll most likely avoid it.

Many other species of cat swim and very much like it. Bengel tigers are great swimmers and sometimes attack people in boats in rivers - quite frightening.

most cats don't like the water because it makes their fur all yucky. some cats don't mind an occasional bath and some actually enjoy drinking water from the faucet. my siamese cat stands in the kitchen sink and lets the water drip down on him so as to give him a little mini-bath. he also likes to drink the fresh water. so unless your cat is a rivercat, the most swimming he/she will do is under the running faucet.
