it is straight up racism. i garuntee you half the people who answer this will give you a dumb remark. in france, it is against the law to show religion in school. you are not allowed to where a hijab or a big cross (funny thing is, you're allowed to wear a regular sized cross). they hate muslims and will show you as much bad stuff about them in the media to such an extent that they over exagerate and make it up. no one has ever brought up nuns being respected while hijabi's are being riticuled. if you ever brought up this information to any news agency, i garuntee they will reject it. i hope people can reflect off of this question. thank you for asking it.

And by the way all you christians out their... the bible says all women shall cover their heads with a veil or shave their heads bald. so dont you dare say that christians or catholics arent forced to, there bible says it clear enough!!! our quran only recommends it, it is the womens final decision...

Before reading some of these answers I would have said that no one thinks they are extremists. But clearly ignorant rednecks do.

However rational people do not think a woman is an extremists because she wears a hijab, but the difference between them an Nuns is Women are not forced to be nuns there are places in the world where women are forced to wear hijab.

Nowadays it would be very rare, if at all, for women to be forced to become a nun. Unfortunately, some Muslims are still in the 15 Century and force their women to wear the Hijab. Also, a nun's habit isn't designed to hide the face.

First of all, I've never considered Muslim women who wear such articles to be "extremists."

Second, Muslim women are forced to wear such articles of clothing -- whether they want to or not, and in some countries, under pain of death.

Catholic women, on the other hand, are not required to wear these things.

It is true that some nuns (some, not all) wear habits -- but that is only if they CHOOSE to become nuns.

No Catholic woman is obligated to become a nun -- and those who choose to become nuns (and join communities where full habits are worn) have no reason to object to the rules that they voluntarily chose to live under.

For Muslim women, again, there is no such choice. They are required to wear the clothing you describe -- again, in some parts of the world, under pain of death.

By the way, few Catholic nuns wear full habits these days -- and for the ones that do, their habits are not nearly as "big" or as "all covering" as the Muslim hijab, niqab, or burqa.

So, for many reasons, your comparisons are not valid.

Nuns wear those clothes (called "Habits") by their own free choice as part of a voluntary religious order. On the other hand, many Muslim woman are forced to wear the hijab by government decree. I realize this is not a direct answer to your question as you posed it, but it does point out one the the major differences between the two.

You will find that the closed orders of Christian Nuns do keep themselves covered up, but they also tend to stay indoors and not be seen in public very much.

Open orders such as the Sisters of Mercy can now wear what they like if they chose too.

I don't personally think that all Muslim women are considered extremists, just the ones who behave as extremists.

MUSLIM WOMEN ARE NOT FORCED TO WEAR THE HIJAB. In some cultures maybe, but islam doesnt force anyone to do anything, you have to make your own choice whether good or bad and then see the outcome. Every muslim woman i know wear the damn thing with their own will, but some maybe their own sister dont wear it, because they dont want to. Therefore it is just racism, and these pathetic christians will never understand, they're just continiously whining about themselves and have NO idea whats happening to innocent muslim children in palestine and iraq. If that was happening to christian children, then damnnn, who knows what would be done..

christians are sick evil bastards..i never thought i would say this, but the ones i've been talking to just make me sick.

Maybe because the muslim women are perceived as being forced to do so by others while the nuns do so by choice

not that that is particularly the case, I just think that is the perception

Not at all...people just have a problem with gov't (Taliban) or societies that supress the rights of women. Wearing itmes on ones head is very common in eastern culture. People in western culture aren't accustomed to seeing this very often because the only religious they see wearing items on their heads are popes, bishops and cardinals. Headwear is very common in the eastern Orthodox Christian religions, Judaism, Islam, Seihkism etc. There is nothing extreme about it at all.

It's a double standard, though I don't think a Muslim woman wearing a hijab is considered an extremist by too many people.
