Why do they call an airport "the terminal" if flying is so safe?

Because it's basically where you (are most likely) to leave the country and "Terminate" your stay in the country. Also, you're terminating your journey on foot for the time being.

To terminate means "to end" You can read what you want, but that won't change common usage.
