Fascism is alive and well. "We want choice to go to a non-smoking pub" whinge the non-smokers, but what they mean is "We don't smoke so neither can you". Have you noticed how many people now develop a coughing fit at the sight of a cigarette? The other day I was sat in my car and got a cigarette out when some kid walked in front and set off in a coughing fit. I hadn't even lit it!

You will love it next year then when the law changes and smoking is banned in all public places.

Why exactly are pubs for adults? Children have lives too and enjoy a good Sunday roast cooked by someone other than their Mum for a change, so their Mum not as frazzled and is in a much nicer mood with them.

What is wrong with someone breastfeeding their baby? It is the most natural thing in the world and if the baby needs feeding it's better for it to be fed than it to be screaming the ruddy place down, going purple and yelling until it makes itself vomit all over you and your beloved pint isn't it?

Anyway mate... the short answer is... you will change your view completely on the day that your first child is born.

I didn't know they were. Whenever I want to go out for a meal with my partner and my kids, we are not very welcome anywhere. Breastfeeding a baby at the bar is bad, I agree with that. But you people are going on about YOUR freedom, well what about the freedom of those who really need it? I would love to be able to join my partner in the pub for an hour or so but can't because I can't take the kids. Most "family friendly" pubs have always been so and in these places, children are not allowed, by law, to be there after 9pm so why are you whinging about your freedom when after 9, you are free to do as you please without kids around.

I don;t see why there should be a problem with anywhere being family friendly during the day, those who don't have kids can go out any time. As for babies, I don;t think a pub is a good atmosphere because of the smoke, etc. but if you are going for a meal at lunchtime and happen to have a baby with you, you should not have people thinking bad of you for feeding the baby. Though, as I said before, feeding the baby at the bar is disgusting, whether it was breast or bottle.

I think the smoke ban is mostly a good thing. It is dirty to smoke around food so it should never have been allowed in restaurants in the first place. However, I think there should still be parts of some pubs where people can still smoke if they choose. I know some smokers who don't like going to certain places because they are smokey.

People who are saying things like you should be able to smoke, kids shouldn't be allowed, my rights, my rights... should understand that there are other people who should have rights too. Non-smokers have the right NOT to breathe in other people's smoke. Parents have the right to take their children out and have a social life. You might say well get a babysitter then, some people can't. And there are people who actually want their children to be included in their life.

There are still so many places where adults can go without children around. There aren't a lot of places where kids can go, particularly if there is a large age gap between the kids so there are not the appropriate activities for all ages in the one place.

As for taking the kids to McDonalds or staying at home, first of all, why should you be expected to stay at home just because you have kids? Second, taking my kids to McDonalds is a lot worse than taking them to a pub.

Someone up there said something about kids "sterilising your fun", ok, well in that case, how about not having a tv in pubs? How about not allowing pubs to show sport? Because that sterilised my fun last time I was out without my kids.

BTW, I know what it's like to be out somewhere where there are loads of annoying kids running around out of control. That is the real problem. There are too many people who take their kids when they just want to get drunk and they ignore the kids. That's a pain, especially when they are on the gaming machines and no one stops them. I control my kids and they have never caused trouble anywhere and they are always out by 9pm. Kids should be in bed then anyway. I was invited to a friends party where I could have took my kids, some people did take kids and they were all really well bhaved but I wouldn't have taken my kids as I didn't know the place and I knew I would be out late. I don;t understand people who allow their kids in these places so late.

I use to work at TGI Fridays. the place s*cks. been with the company for 4 years. it use to be a great place to hang out and to work. IDK....I go right across the border about 30 miles to PA I think it's the only state left that you can smoke, drink, and pass out without anyone judging you. I'm planning on moving there in a year or 2 Jersey s*cks.

I am on the committee of my local CIU working men's club. We openly encourage families to come on in, but it is strictly stipulated that children are to be under parental supervision at all times, and that all children of pre-school age must be off the premises by 21:00 hours. Any children who misbehave are warned that if they have to leave, then whoever accompanies them will have to leave also. So if you are a complete dudley do-right who hates his/her children being given a bollocking by a total stranger, then I say: you should return to your own home and not bother coming back to our club. In conclusion I state that if you want to bring your kids out to the club with you, that's fine. But you must agree to abide by the clubs rules and regulations. If not, then please go somewhere else. Adults still do have a right to come out and enjoy a drink and a chat without some unruly little toe-rag causing aggro.

unfortunately this is true and it's not fair - adults used to have places where they could go to be adults - and now they are taking that all away from us - and I'm a parent of 3 children and TOTALLY AGREE with you!

I understand parents want to go out with their children and have a good time and not have to go to Chuck E Cheeses but we also have to remember what it's like to go out without our children - a pub is no place for a child to be and parents that take their children there are just plain wrong - I wouldn't take my children their and put them in an adult atmosphere where adults want to be adults - you can't even go to Dave and Busters anymore for a NITE out because they are changing their rules to so the can accommodate for families - as far as nursing in public - yes I understand that it's the most natural thing for a mother to do - but you don't have to flash everyone else while you are doing it - everyone doesn't want to see that - I'm not against breastfeeding - I did it - but you don't have to show everyone else that your feeding too

Don't get me wrong I think families should have fun places to go also - but adults need to have their own places too

Agree completely. The world is becoming a sanitsed parent state but worse than that its getting f******* boring!
All to protect the children. What are the parents doing in a pub with kids anyway. Parents take some responsibility, you chose to bring them in the world, stop sterilising my fun to protect your kids.

Well, I have two small kids and I do prefer that I go to a place where there is no smoking. However, I agree, there should be places where you can smoke and drink however you wish and if you don't like it, tough, don't go there. And certainly don't bring your kids there.

But restaurants make more money by catering to families and making their places "family friendly."

It's upto each venue or chain what their rules are and you just gotta live with it I'm afraid.

They're trying to make their money and making the place "Family Friendly" means families will come in, and families are normally 3 or more people therefore it's more money for them because it's more people to drink or eat.

Great question though.

:-)
