It's not. Why do you think that hatred for anything is the "dominant emotion" among those who believe in religious faith?
You just leap to asking "why" this is so -- as if it is a given fact, just like it is a given fact that there are 24 hours in a day.
If this is what you really believe about religious people, then it's plainly obvious that you don't know any.

Because they're viewing religion like a club you join. And, of course, your club has to be better than the next guy's.
Christianity is supposed to be a lifestyle. It's about letting the living spirit of God into your heart and every part of your existance. It's about love, not hate. The only thing God hates is sin.

I am a firm believer in Islam. In my view my God is certainly more powerful than I am. I also believe he has given all people freedom of conscience and belief, and he has not made us into robots or programmed us like animals, but has given us genuine freedom of choice. Based on this choice alone, we have an opportunity to rise up by making the right decisions and rise closer to Him.
I have never felt hate for most human beings, as they are all the artwork of my God. If he had not WILLED them to be on Earth, they would not even be born. If he wills any of them to die, they will die instantly. So, who am I to question my own Creator and pretend to be greater than Him, Almighty, when in the core of our belief we believe ALLAHU AKBAR or God is THE GREATEST!! in every possible and conceivable way it is imaginable.
Those who hate others in my personal view are insecure folks who have either not understood the concept of the Almighty Creator or have emotional problems that they try to direct in a self righteous manner, without having thought through things properly and in a balanced manner.
Ali, the cousin and heir of the Prophet of Islam, who was raised by Prophet Mohammad said very eloquently in one of his speeches recorded in the Nahjul Balagha (The Book of Eloquence; check out under www.al-islam.org) .. that all Believers (Muslims) are my brethren in Islam, all Monotheists (Christians/Jews) are my brethren in ONE GOD, all human beings are my brethren in Adam, all living beings are my brethren in life, and all non-living beings are my brethren in creaturehood of my LORD".
So, where is the opportunity for hate for a true monotheist? If you love Rembrandt, how can you dislike his paintings? I mean, is it possible to do that?
I hope I am making sense.

Your question is based on a fallacy. I know a good many fervently religious people who have no hatred in their hearts whatsoever.

because religious groupssee themselves as better or "holier" (or chosen) over all the others. their book tells them theyre special and all those who arent like them are evil...or worse...not special.
