I am from Bradford and have seen with my own eyes the youth become more devout post September 11. My troublesome friends have grown beards and have changed significantly for the better.
However this has also given rise to "ghettoised" seclusion from the rest of Britain. The way the media has twisted Islam so grossly means that the next generation of white youths is going to grow up with a resentment for muslims, all because of a disassociated, blurred portrayal of ISLAM.

Yes.
Xenophobia works both ways.

... besides, people seem to need little reason to show intolerance.

I don't know about Islamophobia but I can say that all this terrorist activity in the name of Islam and the non Muslim populace response to it have been very polarizing. Personally I think it is difficult for Muslims within their own communities to criticize themseves. In many countries to dissent from a conservative Islamic view could mean, rape, imprisonment, and or death. I realize this is not the case in all communities. However the dysfunctions people have seen in the name of Islam have turned many off to the religion. Personally I have felt at times not wanting to have anything to do with the religion because the dysfunctions were so grave. Then I thought about how Judaism and Christianity have changed over the centuries, they are not sacrificing animals, stoning for heresy, adultery, witchcraft, nor for not resting on the Sabbath. I can mention at least several dozen more dysfunctions, but I will shelf it. My point is that there are harsh and immoral teachings in the Old, and a few in the New Testament as well, but yet they have taken more of a benign form. Why is this? Two reasons, first there are no more theocracies in the west and two because there is more variety and gentler interpretations within the two religions. With Islam however there is a big push to restore the Caliphate. The rights of many individuals will severely be impeded if this happens on a wide scale. Is this Islamophobia? No, it is just an unpleasant possibility, that by the way has already manifested in countries like Iran, Afganistan, & Saudi Arabia via powerful clerics who hold the state, and whom the state who holds them at bay too. Now yes some people have become prejudice and hateful. To me I recognize the difference between the different Muslims but I am not going to say there is not a disturbing trend within the culture at large. I have not seen outrage and disgust when Western targets of terrorism has taken place. And in some instances cheering and candy was thrown around, like when the trade towers went down. There must not be a double standard when it comes to these acts. Unfortunately there are places in the Islam’s “holy” texts that call for a lesser treatment of non-Muslims. In fact in Saudi Arabia they still to this day teach children that non-Muslims are to be seen as enemies. And people wonder why the terrorist are targeting non-Muslims, or anyone for that matter that opposes their political/religious ideology. I would think if Muslims were truly sympathetic they would be up in arms but the fact that there seems to be silence seems they are complicit in a variety of ways. They may out right sympathize. They might sympathize in part, or they may feel too indifferent or scared to act. The book "Islam and Terrorism" by Mark Gabriel was very eye opening from me. Most Muslims will not tell you how these “extremists” justify their actions. But when you read the verses they follow it is glaringly obvious as to why they do what they do. For example Surah 4;89 of the Noble Quran states, "Those who reject Islam must be killed. If they turn back, take them and kill them wherever you find them". How do you literally interpret that any other way but what it says? There are many such other examples just as harsh towards non believers such as People of the Book getting who have a second class status, and all others pretty much getting nothing. As I said before not all Muslims believe or will act on this but as far as I can tell most are sympathetic towards theocratic governments and if that happens non-Muslims will not get much of a say and can be abused through governmental corruptions and or harsh interpretations of the Sharia. I do speak out because I hate Muslims. I love all Mankind wishing only the best for all. I say this because it is a serious problem and must be addressed. Moderate Muslims should not be scared to address this problem as well. In the end it will save them and everybody else much grief by doing so. The image of Islam will improve and people will willingly come to the religion, and not out of coercion. Peace be to all who read this.

I am afraid you may have missed it. European youths will grow up Muslim. Watch the next 50 years. The church in Europe is already dead-look around you. Most churches have closed. There is no growing Church in Europe except a few American evangelistic implants. And they are strangled not by the Muslims but by the Europeans. You guys are history. I don't mean that in an ugly way, but if Europe does not pull their head out of their behinds soon they will become Islamic servants.

Since 9/11 Muslim numbers have been increasings and these christians cant handle it, because THEY are the ones who use force tactics making people turn to their religion, and muslims, without force, have increased their population. These stupid christians dont know nothing and cant tolerate anything either. Before 9/11 OF COURSE bosnians, iraqis, palestinains were being killed by christians and jews. and christians themselves have been killed so many jews for no reason (shows how violent they are) Muslim commit suicide because of THEM. they've seen their childrean being killed, tortured and its caused them to go insane and mad over it seeing that they themlselves are living peacefully AND killing their children too.
Try to respect muslim youth, you might get less suicide bombers, because they often feel they won't fit because of the abuse, and soo..
I'll tell a fact .
After 9/11, many people have been wondering WHAT ISLAM IS?
so they go get themlseves a quran. after readin ir proerly they realise islam is the only true religion and become muslims =)

From a reasonable point of view, the civilized Europe September 11 reacted in away different to US.

My own understanding is that if your friend is hurt, you will support him, yet try to learn the causes of such pain to avoid it.

So Europe -as it is geographically close to Muslims population is Asia, and Africa- decided to study Islam to see what is the cause of such haterage to US.

The results seem to be in Islam favor as they managed to understand what is the difference between Terror caused in the name of Islam and the true Islam that Spain to Russia were under its flag for centuries.

So yes Islam is growing everywhere after Islam as the evil act did not kill Islam, yet opened a window to grasp people attention.

AsslamuAlaikum. The media had an extreme result on my decision of Islaam. I had non secular mom yet by no skill somewhat replaced into interested in Islam untill i began to be inquisitive about Islam via media. I said, that the media made Muslims look violent, evil and loopy people. i replaced into open-minded sufficient to study Quraan, and are available to the coolest Islam is the reality. actual, the media brings thousands of thousands of people to Islam- It makes people experience curious.. It also makes people, favor to appreciate Muslims as their is this style of large style of muslims worldwide. Islam is captivating in a lot of techniques, something so captivating should be disliked. Plus, my imaan will strengthen on each occasion I see that Islam is hated, it makes me keep in mind that the reality is disliked. :) Allumdillah

just wondering sir..
have your family been blown up?
have you been chased by people yelling 'Allahu Akbar' with a blade?

If you haven't, then you should not discredit those victims.

everybody will be affraid if they experience those.
although 911 does not affect me.. but I am one of the victim the tragedy of 14 may in South Asia (never heard of those, do you? i thank God with media.. It hurt more when the rest of the world is silence -either pretending they do not know or just a plain ignorance).

I have felt the terror of getting my house burned down just because i am a Christian and a chinese descendant..
It took me years to forgive those zealot Muslims...
Western REACTS to muslim's actions.

the only way it can be cleared up is if the muslims themselves can prove (thru actions not words) that they are not the religion of terror.

I'm not afraid of anything, but I don't want to practice Islam necessarily.I don't want to do anything foreign, because it crimps MY style.
As for ghettos, most people tend to dwell only with their own anyway.Islamists would have to do more of what we do to hang out with us,so would Asian Zen Buddhists, but they don't wanna. Why should Western folks do all the adjusting??
